IH no.15 plow correct tire and rim?

I’m pulling an old IH no.15 3 bottom 14” plow from the tree line and going to restore it. But my question is what are the correct tires and rims?, currently has old dry rotted car tires on it. One rim is for sure shot so I’m planning on just replacing both but oddly enough the rims are a 4 lug rim. The car tires that is on it say 178-15, I’m not sure what that translates to but the plow is hydraulic lower/lift not rope trip any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

Probably an L78-15, the old bias sizing standard. It used to be common to use old car tires, but not many vehicles use 15" tires anymore, so it's hard to find good used car tires anywhere near the right size anymore.

I checked google to confirm, the No.15 does use standard 4-bolt implement wheels. Those are pretty common and not too terribly expensive. Fortunately it does not use the style of rims that the 8 uses, as you can't get those new.

6.70-15 is a good size to use. The plow could come with a few different size tires on it and any are correct.

You about have to buy implement tires and 6.70's are probably right, or at least close. I watch for car tires the right size but don't find many these days. I'll check what size the ones I put on the 70 plow last summer are later today.

My IH 3-14 had special rims that only fit the plow. I could not get a regular 6 stud rim on the plow. I ran a 16 inch tire on my old rims though.

I would look at the selection of trailer tires, if you want a 13" to 16". They are cheaper than vehicle tires, a plow looking tread and have long-life in the sun. Also, I have seen 4 lug rims, with real luck even one that fits the plow hub. WalMart on line supports several trailer tire vendors and their local tire shop will mount the new tire. I paid around $100 for a 10 ply 15" tire mounted and balanced there. Replace an automotive tire that exploded on the trailer when I hit the curb last summer with the tractor loaded, cheap piece of crap had a 1 ply radial side wall.

  Pretty common back then to have implements outfitted with used car or truck tires.  It was a way to save a few bucks on a purchase to put car or truck tires on versus implement tires.  The nearest IH dealer to the farm here back during the 1950's - 1980's was right across the road from the Goodyear store and I remember more than one conversation about putting used truck tires on a piece of equipment  which was shipped with rims but no tires.  Dad's 37 disk and 140/61 forage wagons never had implement tires even when new.  Dad's Brillion MD 14' cultimulcher which came new from that IH dealer had used truck tires.   I never thought the quality on most implement tires was all that special even back then.  Grandpa's 2A hay conditioner which is still here came with BF Goodrich implement tires of which the tread looks much closer to an automotive tread versus a modern ribbed implement tire.

We used to keep a whole rack of recap implement tires at the dealer shop
When setting up new equipment , just try to get some that look the same
they had the straight line implement tread from the local retread shop

Not many of those retread shops around these days

We put used air plane tires on the brush cutters
urethane gell filled , so no need for air

I've seen new IH 480 disks with automotive tires. Probably trailer tires.

Pretty sure I've seen it in advertising/brochures on the 480.

6:00-16 tires on old 3/14" McCormick plow with 8 hole wheels & 4 hole hubs.

Back in the day most implements were ordered tire delete and dealers just used tires trom local tire dealers, new or used to defray cost from implement mfgs.

Rear tire for 2-16 little genus plow.      Thinking has 6.5-9 now but Huge bulb on tread.
