1/25th Paystar 5000 log truck

So I said I would post this as I went along. I have some of it done and thought I would start a thread on it.

 

Started out with the engine and its accessories. Initially I said I was going to just put it togehter like the one I had as a kid but chose instead to paint and detail it as good as i could. (Which isn't great), been quite a while since I've done one of these. I did some research online and found the DV800 in trucks was a blue color.  I painted any engine part I though would be blue.  Painting over the orange takes quite a few coats.

This was what I came up with at first.  I left the air compressor and transmission black and painted the alternator silver to be more realistic.

 

I was not satisfied with the filters so I painted them to give me a Baldwin look. After doing this i did some more research and I think maybe the filters are canisters from the pictures I found? Not certain on that but I like them better than the engine color.

Next came the frame and accessories such as the fuel tanks, battery boxes, axles, steering gears and batteries.

With all these pieces ready it was time to get them together.

Time to get the axles put on.

Next Step was the wheels. I decided to take a little bit of advice from the instruction manual and scrape the Chrome on the bud Wheels and paint the open areas black to give it the effect of having the space where the holes are at in the bud Wheels. I was happy with the way they turned out.

With the black painting done on the bud Wheels it was time to put them on. The manual says to oil them so they can rotate freely but I had an issue with the front axle not wanting to snap on properly where they could rotate and since it's a static display model I ended up gluing the front wheels in place. The back wheels however did pop on and will rotate freely. I think the front wheels will give it a little added security of not rolling off a shelf.

With the chassis done the next step was to start on the cab. I did quite a bit of research online looking at different color schemes and I seen a lot of them that appeared to have tan on tan or brown on tan style interior. Since it is a late 70s, early 80s truck and brown and tan were popular colors back then that's what I went with. I also decided to do the steering wheel in a white collar to give it the effect of an older steering wheel from that time period. Hopefully it came out to look realistic enough as it took 5 coats of paint to cover the orange color over the course of three days.

 

In the first picture notice that the passenger side does not have a seat but only has the heater box. I could not find when I painted it and put it together a good interior shot that showed the heater box. As bad luck would have it after I had it painted and put up in the cab I found a nice interior shot that showed that heater box being painted a tan color. I really wish now I would have done it as when it sits in the cab the black is not visible as well and the brown colored heater box would show up better inside.

So that brings me up to the point where I am currently at. The chassis is assembled and the cab interior is assembled and installed as are the windows. Unfortunately I was not careful enough with the glue and it got on the inside of the clear polystyrene windows and I could not wipe it off with paint thinner or with a rag so they have some small smear marks on the inside. All in all though I'm happy with them as I'm not a pro at this and it's been many years since I've done one.

The Next Step will be to add all the Chrome pieces to the outside of the cab and then start with the hood and grill installing them and then the log rack on the back of the truck and then onto the trailer. I have been working on and off at this for the past month so the pace is slow going and it may be awhile till the next update. Hope you like it.

You have a lot more patience than I would doing that. Also getting that much detail on something so small is something I can't do.

Thanks BJ. I am not great at the detailing but I can make it look somewhat decent with small fine bristle modeling brushes I bought. They help immensely

A semi model would be fun to play with but I think the Scout I did recently got that bug out of my system for another 20 years. LOL

I know you ha e seen this before but let it be motivation for a a finished product ?

I need the motivation.  I have not touched it since I posted the pictures.  Spring and summer work like mowing grass is now getting in the way.

Great work!  I built that kit myself 30 years ago, along with an IH 350 Pay Hauler, JD 310 Backhoe, Great Dane extended flat bed trailer, and a 4300.   Loved those older Ertl/AMT kits.

Keep up the good work!
