Bradley David Good Posted June 4 Posted June 4 Hi, I looked at this yesterday. I need something for a few months to level my sloped yard and create tiers. The yard is mostly shale and not much dirt. The dozer has sat for two years. being told by trusted person that it worked fine before that. Hydraulic fluid on dipstick looked clean new and full. Engine oil looked fine too. Rust looks surface only and nothing serious. Tracks look good. Guy was talking $3,000. I told him I need it running and everything working and he is getting his nephew mechanic to do that. Here is the list I made: Radiator leaking? 4 hyd hoses replaced Fuel tank and injection pump cleaned New v belt Battery Thanks! Quote
mike newman Posted June 5 Posted June 5 is that a genuine Fiat ??...with the arse about face hand clutch ?? ..before you get to carried away...check that the brakes haven't frozen up...I have to do a brake job on the same size crawler (Fiat )..that has sat outside for two yrs and the brakes are frozen solid...(I had two excavators...one chained to a top grouser ..t'other gently pulling the machine..no go.)..and its a major to service the brakes...full final drive removal............... Should that engine fire right up..don't need to mess with the feul pump...Fiat's have excellent engines.....you have the engine hours on the tachometer...presupposing it still functions.... supermechanic Posted June 5 Posted June 5 T340 gasser? 25 cents a pound, complete, unproven. Up to half a buck/pound, known running. Baby crawlers are neat toys, but you have a lot of hoses that need (kinda spendy). If I did not already have two crawlers, I would entertain having this one. Pull all the oil drain plugs, look for water, before even thinking about moving it. Quote
supermechanic Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Not gas, (posting before second cup of coffee). Still cool. Quote
Chester5732 Posted June 5 Posted June 5 Your post made me think of this. I am in no way suggesting that your life sucks. Just thought it was funny. 3 Quote

ZERO brakes ...now useless! a week to change and where $$$ do you stop?? Sure you want to play....BTDT ..... unless you use it at his place for 3/day 8hr and he re-fixs ALL... Put $7-9K into a case 450 that you also just run 10hrs.....you will add $2-4K and get $4-8K back in two years. unfortunate another one going for scrap Quote

MacAR Posted June 6 Posted June 6 Don't even try with that one. I had a 340 utility tractor a while back and parts were non-existent; I can't imagine there'd be anything at all out there for a T-340. Heed the advice above from men with much more experience than I: run! 2 Quote
TN Hillbilly Posted June 6 Posted June 6 Hi Bradley, Sorry this group isn't giving you the answer you were hoping for. But they do speak from experience. That is a neat machine, but I don't think it is a pour-a-few-hundred-in-it-and-get-a-weeks-work-done machine. I question whether it was running and operational two years ago. Not saying your person is lying, but he might be misremembering. Or maybe they did get it to start, a couple years ago, but I think it's been a while since that was a usable machine. Speaking as a person who bought a dozer for similar reasons (ostensibly to use around the farm but probably mostly because I wanted it...) I can tell you for certain that the fastest, easiest, and by far cheapest way to get your yard fixed is to go rent a small dozer or large tracked skid steer and get er done. If you buy an old machine like this, you will have more money and time into it than you expect, and your yard will be exactly like it is today. Or as others have said, but a newish machine, use it for your project, then sell it. But not all of us can cash flow that. Best of luck to you. If you do buy the dozer, ignore everything we've said and bring us along for the ride as you resurrect it. Please. 3 1 Quote

Mike What do you mean by Fiat? It's an International TD-340. I do not plan on moving forward unless he gets it running and moving and all the levers do what they are supposed to do. Thanks 3 Quote

The guy was saying the hoses can be made at a local Amish shop for $20 each and his nephew can install them. I counted 4 hoses that looked bad. Good idea about the oil/water, thanks! Quote

just Dave Posted June 6 Posted June 6 Unfortunately it is a long project with NO parts support. The rental machine will work 10x faster than an old one, you have to baby old stuff. The ease of operation newer vs old is not even comparable. So sorry, good luck. Quote
mmi Posted June 6 Posted June 6 6 hours ago, Bradley David Good said: OK, sounds bad. You are saying the tracks look like they are almost worn out? 3" of adjustment left and adjuster ^&^*&.....hasnt been run 20hrs yet,to now need 6" Unless his "amish" are going to do $4k (2x)remove a chain link , for $200 and then $3K in now, can of worms.(UC seals bearings)..you will still have < 20% chains. however plenty of "good" parts to put on the shelf, location? normal "peasants" cant home build ANY 1/2" hose for < $1.50 inch and the return/supply are closer to $3 > in. If fully functioning it should ,80% "square" corner at 1/3 throttle and lazy chair effort/function.........there is nothing to "stick" simply 1/16 of wear life. 450 night/day but only 15 yrs newer 90 >cat d4c are nice but usually $$$$$ wooped jap junk. higher/rent bids and discuss a budget.if over $15K you can consider buying something ,you watched WORK 8hrs for $10K +- 1 Quote
supermechanic Posted June 6 Posted June 6 No 20-dollar hose since maybe 1975. Each end goes for 20, if common. Strange fittings can be 65 a pop, even more. 3 bux an inch for hose is not uncommon. I recently re-plumbed a 6-lever control valve on a pin-on hoe; hoses alone were 1700 . I'm cheap at 65 an hour; total job cost was 2400. I've also never known an Amishman who was not afraid to charge top dollar. Go into this with both eyes wide open; there is truth to the statement "good stuff is not cheap, and cheap stuff is not good." 2 Quote
supermechanic Posted June 6 Posted June 6 8 hours ago, Bradley David Good said: I do not plan on moving forward unless he gets it running and moving and all the levers do what they are supposed to do. Thanks Smart. Smarter yet is to find a more common machine. All here love our IH products, but there is no parts support for most of the 60-year-old equipment we see. Parts breakers have rows of John Deere 450 dozers; still a lot of factory support on old JD iron. Case and Caterpillar also. Massey and Allis-Chalmers were good in their day as well, but that was 50 years ago. If you need to own a machine, buy something made in the last 20 years, spend 30k or so, do your job, and sell it to recoup the investment. 1 Quote

Mike Fiat ended up with a bunch of A-C stuff after the creation of Fiat-Allis. It is similar in size to the Fiat 653, which had its start as the Allis HD4 Quote
