MagnumOwner Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 Hello everyone. I have a case 7120 i would like to turn up and I would like to know if this is the right plug i remove to fill the pump back up with oil after i drain it. I also would like to know how much i can turn it in before it’s too much. I have a 20ft offset disc i’d like to use it on and on the hills it struggles a little. Our JD 4440 handles it a little better but that one was turned up by JD Quote

Pump is fed engine oil thru front gear housing. No need to add oil. Before juicing it up you better gauge your transmission regulated circuit, check throttle linkage adjustments, fuel inlet pressure, air induction system and boost pressure. Low boost could be a lack of fuel inlet pressure. Too many times have seen the results of setting delivery up just to waste the next weakest link in line. I would think and 8.3 would walk all over a JD 466, making me suspect something not quite right with your 7120. 1 Quote

I know the 466 will fly up the hill by the farm in D4 pulling the offset disc almost wide open, the 8.3 does half that with a batwing mower, It hardly smokes even under a load. It still has the under the hood muffler on it. For the most part it’s okay but you can definitely tell it has less torque/lug than the 466 Quote
HydroTek Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 Check the charge fuel pressure -- common for the lift pump to wear and not deliver enough fuel The magic screw is under that square cover -- 7/16 socket and a small screw driver -- turn the screw 1/2 turn clockwise 1 Quote

So do i need to take that plug out of the top and refill the pump with oil or will it refill by itself Quote

Doesn’t hurt to be sure haha It is fine oil pumps into it via the oiling system. Check accumulators psi too. Just make sure everything is good before adding more hp. I ammmm with others. Assuming fuel and air filters are fresh? Throttle is 100% rpm [2500 isnt it?] My unlce beat to death 7120 with 15 year old filters pulls a 22' disc and rolling basket easily. Fun story. Neighbor has a very low hour 8300 JD. 1500 to 1800hr on her. complaining needs more hp to chop so brings to guys shop up the road. Very good mechanic, love IH too. Wants him to put a Bully Dog tuner on and get 260hp to chop. He says ok. I stopped after and it dynoed the 260. He said the tractor had the OEM air filter and fuel filters on it. Mechanic is a big guy and said the Airfilter was hard to remove and hold up it was so loaded. The fuel filters when tipped over barely dripped. He figure the tuner gave it 40hp and the service 75hp Quote
Jeff-C-IL Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 My 9230 4x4 has the 8.3 in it and would toy with that disk. I was warned NOT to turn it up by some very good service techs...they said those engines would run fine at the standard setting, but would tend to blow head gaskets and warp heads in pushed. I owned a DTI466 equipped 4386 before, with bigger turbo, and the 9230 will outperform that by a bit. The IH 466 & JD 466 always seemed to be close in performance (although the IH had better low end!) It sure sounds like the engine is not performing like it should. I would definitely check the things noted before just trying to crank the screw. But your tractor- your choice. Funny story - now! I got a JD 7410 that last harvest could barely pull a 450bu wagon down the road. Smoked like a steam engine too. I thought something had to be major wrong - like turbo packed up. Local tech reminded me to check the air filter...(But I just cleaned that 50 hours ago! Yeah but it was really dusty this spring - check it anyway.) I pulled it out - and it was packed solid. This fall, same tractor pulled (2) 450bu wagons in tandem - no struggle, no smoke, easy as pie! 2 Quote
acem Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 Back in the late 70s a neighbor had a nice 1466 with two post ROPS. Big tractor round here at the time. Neighbor (notorious for not performing maintenance) complained it had no power and needed rebuilt. Dad asked him if it had been serviced lately, certain it hadn't. Neighbor grumbled something. Dad got a crescent out and tried to remove the air filter. It was so full of dirt it took a lot of work and some time to remove it. Dad cleaned the filter as best you could and put it back in. The 1466 came back to life! Dad told him to buy new air and fuel filters. Thx-Ace 1 Quote
