BB's 986 spruce up thread

In about April of 2018 I bought this 4,800 hr 986 and I sure was proud of it.  I had wanted my own 986 since I was about 11 years old because a neighbor farmer had one on his farm and I got to use it as a kid.  It was still pretty new then 10-12 years old which to a poor farm kid seemed like brand new

 

When I got it the governor didn't work right and sometimes it would die less than half throttle and not want to restart which progressively got worse and I put it in the barn in 2019 and hadn't moved since till yesterday.  

Yesterday I brought it down to my house to work on and do a little clean up fix a few things and hopefully get it back to work!

Back in February of this year I bought a good used injection pump off a fellow IH guy through an auction on Facebook.  The tractor it came from was supposed to be running good so I bid and won.  

 

Today I got started on swapping it out, something I hadn't ever done!   But I had read every thread I could find on this forum and I do have the complete service manual so I sat out to change out the faulty pump. 

 

The pump that was on it didn't have the tag nor any paint so I think it was probably swapped out at some point for the original one.   Wasn't too bad of a job but not knowing where the donor pump was set I did have it one rotation off and had to loosen the front gear and turn it 3 clicks a trick I learned from reading here. 

 

Needless to say I am more than tickled that this runs as it should.   That's all for today and yes it took me a while as I am not a seasoned IH mechanic like most of you on here!!! 

 

Did I mention I hollered "he11 yeah" when it fired off again after not firing off the first time!  I am stoked!

Something about trying and failing, and that gives you experience. But doing the homework as you did here hopefully very few failures.👍

I'm going to have to loosen the oil cooler to get drain plug in the block.   Do I have to drain antifreeze in order to do that?

Think I'm going to start reading about how to turn the fuel up a little as it doesn't smoke at all.  My 1586 when you roll into the throttle smokes just a bit.  I realize this isn't a 15 so I don't want to get crazy but also don't want it not having enough fuel?

The front water ports on the oil cooler are now seeping.  I just put water back in it to check for leaks so it looks like the oil cooler is going to have to come back off.

The more I mess with this the more I find wrong.   I gotta remind myself it's a 46 year old working tractor doesn't have to be perfect.   I'm going to let it dry from washing it and then tear into the AC system.   I got nearly everything to replace the whole system this week from AP Air.

Anyone have any thoughts on these cab mounts?   I bought new ones but they are the same thickness and won't raise the cab up any?   I can't open the back window without taking off the gas cap is one of the main reasons why I thought they were bad.

Fixed this with some new o rings yesterday

New AC system held vacuum so I charged this morning with 4 cans.    It seems to be working as it should so I put the new foam kit in the roof and the new bolts and clips I got for the roof.    Drained the water this morning and added antifreeze.

Gonna try out two turn out.

Ended up turning the screw out 3 full turns.   Tractor now pulls the hill in road gear behind the house without loosing hardly any rpm and doesn't smoke.  

 

As of this writing I've installed the turbo setup and injection pump, adjusted the shifters, installed the newer style steps, changed the oil and antifreeze along with the hydro filter and topped fluid off.  Also changed fuel filters.  Quickly painted some of the sheet metal so it looks a little better.   

 

Still need to move one rear wheel out so they both match.  May replace the lower interior foam kit too while I've got it here at the house.

Holy moly, you are covering a lot of things on that tractor, looks good. Are you going to restore it or just tidy it up?

Lots of progress there, we just about will not work the AC on 86 series without doing a complete, hoselines, condenser and evaporator anymore. They always get a new expansion valve and drier. Only way the don't is if, the customer has memory of them being replaced recently. 

Is that a hydraulic hose between final fuel filter and injection pump? If so, should switch it out to the correct hose, 688190C1

Just a spruce up for now.   I'll be really glad to have tractor as a turn key tractor that I can use.    Probably just on the batwing

I understand the logic on that model of AC repair  

 

The hose I believe is the correct one but it's badly weather checked so I do plan to replace it and also the oil cooler hoses as well.   The hoses on the steering cylinder don't look good either... 

 

 Last place I wanna be is on the back side of the place bush hogging and have to walk to the house over a hose I was too lazy and cheap to replace to begin with lol.   We've all made that walk of shame before lol

Injection hose replaced as is the hydraulic cooler hoses.   If anyone needs to know it's 1/2 ID oil resistant hose and you need 16ft total.   15 might do it but it would be close.

This is whooping my tail.   I've been dreading this task but I can't live with the rear wheels being spaced about 4" differently.
