7740 Ford

Local New Holland dealer had a 7740 out on lot with a loader on, drove it around today, seems kind of complicated shifting arrangement with several buttons to push, never did figure out if it had a reverser, it is a 4wd,

Is it a 16 speed powershift or a regular 12 speed?

Heard bad things about parts availability for one of the transmissions in them, and something about problems with electrical controls on the hydraulics? The 00 series or 10 series 7000s are pretty bulletproof it seems.

Yes I probably have, slowly aging out of this , there are at least 5 or 6 dealers around plus at least 6 big consignment auctions, I call it recess time, and they encourage try before you  buy,at this stage this 856 custom that I picked up will probably be one of the last ones, I call it my therapy or hobby tractor, after milking I try and work on it an hour or so, I see when most guys age out they go into woodworking, at their estate sale there are always all kinds of woodworking tools on the sale, I still enjoythe challenge of getting things to work properly on these tractors, this 856 will take the place of the 350 that we tried to make work and then finally sold, lucky if we got the parts back out of it, I sure do appreciate all the help that is offered on this site,

I do the same.  I’ve bought four innthe last three years with the idea of selling them. Then I put clutches in for fun, roll in bearings, for fun, (I like to see what’s inside of things)….then I keep them.  I did sell one, and I regret it

The 7710 were kings in the county S of me   They had good dealer as well.  There isn't hardly a farm in that area that did not otlr does not have a 7710 or 7810 mfd open cab Ford.  Tough machines.  Iirc the tail of a modern Farmall 110 etc is near same casting still

First tractor I ever drove was a 7710.  Fords were and are still common where I am from, great machines IMO, always thought they deserve a better reputation than being forgotten in the red vs green color wars.

Don’t forget them.  I hook them to hay rakes and run them all day on about 8 gallons of fuel

Is the 7700 series a 4 cyl? We love that 4 cyl in the ford branded versatile bidirectional units. Thrifty on fuel and enough power to get job done.

Looks like the 9030 had the bigger 4 cyl , they are very good engine. They always said the 3.9 Cummins wasn’t a good engine in the bidi. I don’t know if they ran the unbalanced engine but most of those owners complained of vibration all the time.
