Cub Belly Mower Identification

Hello,

 

Looking for some help on determining the brand and model of the mower if possible on my 1948 Cub. There's a couple tags but nothing is legible on them and the mowers been modified some at some point so its hard to tell for me. It works great and is really quiet but would like to dig around and find some of the missing parts if I can and a manual for it. I'm guessing it had some kind of drive belt tensioner originally and with that missing the belt slips fairly easily.

 From pics I found it may be a Woods but it has enough of the original stuff missing I am not sure.

From here either woods/danco 59/60

IIRC woods went with 2 sheave pulleys to take up the slack/wear

Looks like there are spacers/shims under the out ends of that flat bar your lower pulley and gear box are mounted to. Could possibly pull some of that out to tighten up your belt for now.

Yes there's some there I can do that for sure and it would help. It's actually a 2x4 so I'm sure it's not factory lol. Looking at more pictures I don't see anything with a gearbox like this so far so maybe all of that's been fabricated form parts laying around.

I'll take some spacers out and see what happens.

I never have seen a Woods with a gear box 

or that style of spindle bearing housing

or that style of gauge wheel brackets

so , likely not a Woods

I've never seen a Woods mounted with the "pointy side" forward like that. Or a Danco/IH for that matter. The deck is shaped all wrong even if it were flipped around.

There are a few less common off brand mowers out there. Sun-Mastr is one such mower, but it does not appear to be that either.

In fact it may not be a factory mower at all. It might be something the original owner pieced together.

Definetly NOT a Woods, Kub Klipper or Danco...I would guess a Pennington brand mower.

There was a mower that IH sold for the Cub

Do you know who made that one ?

Also was a flail style mower , not sure who made that one

We are a Woods dealer , so most were of that type around here

Well it IS Woods method of  running one belt around  3 spindles... unless  that is more common than I realize.

I haven't seen a gear box like this either looking around. I seem to only find parts and pieces that are similar to different Woods mowers but not much similar in general to what I have .

That's been what I've seen too and the top pulleys on this look similar to woods but lots of other parts don't look the same on anything I can find a picture of.

May be someone's left over parts lol

Ok I mostly find Woods and Danco or something with IH model numbers on them so I'm not familiar other brands especially the less common ones but it could be pieced together from a few not even made for a cub or IH of any kind. 

 

Leave it to me to find something odd lol

More research for me ahead.

Danco, and the most common flail is a Mott. Not sure if there were any other brands of flail but with Cubs, you never know.

Customized. This is a parts layout I found for the Pennington. Everything but the gearbox. Someone may have gotten frustrated with the belt turning 90 for the PTO shaft and installed the gearbox.

Oh wow! That looks a lot like it. I knew for sure the 2x4 the gearbox is mounted on was customized for sure! LOL

Yeah , Mott
couldn't remember the name

We only had  few of those that came in the shop , most were Woods
