IH 186 Axle Housing

Do all 186s have a hexagonal rear axle housing or did it change during the production run?

Ours has a hex housing

1980 model year production but could've been a soft running change as parts were used up. "Scalloped" housings were no longer needed to hold cab and fender clamps.

Is that one a Triple Stripe?

If the Tri-Stripe question was for me it is not - just a 1979 model.

I'll have to look but I'm pretty sure mine is the older style with fender scallops.  It's an early model 76?

Pretty sure the 186 would not have a square axle - hex only, like all "large frame" IH.   It may or may not have the "dimples" for the fender clamps as above

I never realized that IH phased the dimples in the axle housing out during the 86 series.  They were not longer needed and likely saved machining costs.  Wonder when this occurred?

I thought it was a soft November 1 1979 changeover which meant 1980 production but there was that strike thing.....
