jass1660 Posted January 14, 2025 Posted January 14, 2025 I had a 5488 with Elwood front end. Offset driveshaft and can’t recall exactly how the transfer case was on but it would constantly overheat driving on the road even though it was disengaged and blowing the seals out. Vented the fill plug on the side and it helped but so glad the 7140 replaced it. Quote

That's the aspect of which I have zero knowledge but since there was a decal for AWD on the left side of the cab frame and a ghost slot in the floor pad next to the park brake lever I always wondered. R190 Posted January 14, 2025 Posted January 14, 2025 when we got those units new they came with a tool kit that consisted of a hole saw, drill bits and a tap (maybe 2 ) along with a fixture you modified the adapter plate with it. It wa snot too bad of a job I still have one of those kits on the shelf an possiblly the installation manual. 1 Quote

Bermuda_Ken Posted January 15, 2025 Posted January 15, 2025 The offset Elwood on the 5X88 series was the first gen axle that Elwood offered. The second gen Elwood axle for the 5X88 was a center line drive like the IH All Wheel Drive (aka Dana) was. Straight shaft from trans to front axle. The 3X88 always used the side drive line like that on the 06-86 series. Elwood became factory installed on IH's in 1978? when Coleman was dropped. You can convert an Elwood fwa setup to a 2wd... This 5488 (formerly owned by Brooks McCormick...yes..THAT McCormick of the IH Company) WAS an early Elwood offset drive tractor. It had its fwa axle removed long before it was sold on Brooks auction... The side drive box stayed on the tractor until a few years ago when it was finally removed. 3 Quote
