Jason Goodman Posted September 5 Posted September 5 Sorry for the dumb question but I’ve bought a 1086 with six sets of rear weights and fluid in the tires,I’ve spoken for but haven’t gotten it yet a 480 disc,I plan on taking the wings off and just using the center section that I think is 12 or 14 ft,I’m only wanting to rough up pastures and hay fields for reseeding,Do you think the tractor will be good enough without duals? I would think a 1086 wouldn't even know the disc is back there. I pull a 10 or 12 food disc with an M, 1 set of weights and no fluid. 1 Quote
Jason Goodman Posted September 5 Author Posted September 5 Ok thank you,All the equipment I’m going to get I’m getting set up for use without duals, I have the singles spread out for pulling a round baler and don’t plan on using anything in tilled ground. Quote
Jason Goodman Posted September 5 Author Posted September 5 And I’ve gotten a JD seven shank ripper I’m going to shorten to three shanks I have a lot of clay and thank that will be plenty for the tractor. Quote
snoshoe Posted September 5 Posted September 5 If it was me. I think I would be unloading some of the unnecessary weight from tractor. Also I would leave wings folded on disk as weight to assist cutting sod. 6 Quote
Jason Goodman Posted September 5 Author Posted September 5 I know the weight on the disc would benefit what I’m going to do with it but I just really need only the center section and can use the wings for blades and bearings if I need them. Quote

Stored on the disk. You will know where to find them. 3 Quote
Jason Goodman Posted September 5 Author Posted September 5 And just to clarify my use for this tractor,I grew up in the late 70s and 80s and anyone that had a 66/86 was a big farmer,I bought a 81 1086 tri stripe to pull a roller but mainly because I always wanted one! So I’m getting some equipment to use with it! 1 Quote
Gearclash Posted September 5 Posted September 5 Yes leave the wings on and folded up. We used to tear out alfalfa that way with a 475 and a 1066. Quote
acem Posted September 6 Posted September 6 My 1086 will pull my 21ft 480 just fine in most conditions here. Quote
lotsaIHCs Posted September 6 Posted September 6 If you decide 6 sets of rear weights is overkill, I know a guy in ND who would hang a couple sets on his 1066 so you didn't have to mess with storing them!😉🤭 Quote
Ihfan4life Posted September 6 Posted September 6 You should be fine if you’re just roughing up old hay fields and pastures. If you’re on tilled ground you might want duals as any soft spots you’ll quickly find your limits… I agree with the others, keep your wings folded and on the disc if you’re not using them. Quote
Jason Goodman Posted September 6 Author Posted September 6 I want to thank everyone for the replies. Quote

I need to keep them on the tractor because if I take them off and they lay around too long my wife will have them listed on marketplace,If it was legal she would have a listing for a old, fat, bald man, very cheap!! 1 Quote
Takn4aFool Posted September 7 Posted September 7 used to pull a 24' 490 that had 20' blades and a 3 bar spring tine harrow on back with a 3688 or a 1066, neither one of them had any weights or fluid on singles. if i wanted to tear up some sod or headlands i kept the wings folded up for better penatration 1 Quote
Drysleeves Posted September 8 Posted September 8 What's the blade spacing on the 480? That will impact how it pulls but mostly what it's going to look like after you're done. A 1086 should have no problems with either a 7 & 1/2 or 9" spaced 480 folded or not. Quote
