Rim has little grippy traction ribs all around the bead area. Those can rust off, and let wheel slip like that too

Yup -- had not heard those called grippy ribs 

Tires may just be old an dry rotted enough to not grip the rim

If Tires were properly inflated, that was my first thought. I have heard Tractorpuller  types talked about that

Although back when we were able to have pictures on here, every so often, somebody would post a picture of a rim, that had  so much more rust on it than I ever thought would have hold a Tire, yet it was still holding

The Big Buds had this problem.
From what I read, they welded short beads perpendicular to the bead where the tire bead sits to help, if that makes sense.

Shouldn't be a problem on a 1086, though. Good tires, good wheels, proper pressure should be fine. Or just go tubeless.

Ive seen drag race cars with screws to hold the tire to the rim.

Some off readers use bead lockers to hold the tires on the wheel.
