Hi.
I noticed that my pilot bearing is sticking out of the flywheel (0.110in) instead of being pressed in flush with the flywheel. I thought it looked strange so I checked the manual, which says "Ensure the pilot bearing is pressed fully into the flywheel".

I'm curious, do you think this pilot bearing is installed correctly?

Thanks

Do not recognize what you are working on. You could yank that bearing and measure up and see if it is bottomed or you could tap around on that outer race and see if it will go in anymore.

Perkins Powered CX series tractor?

Agree with above statement, in the past I've turned those flywheels under spec and had to also turn down the pilot bearing housing as well. That said I've never turned one down that far.

Just a thought, check the width of the new bearing vs the old one

..interesting things, spigot bearings..

..local bloke had a 504  Standard...said the gear box was stuffed...couldn't get it into any gear, thus wanted rid of it...As I had a slew of 504 parts..I brought the tractor ,,it was very good physically..very tidy...

Split the tractor...replaced the seized spigot bearing ...and that was all required...Got another great little machine for those minor farm jobs

sometimes you get lucky !!

Hello again.
I didn't want to take it apart until I had what I needed to finish it.

But today I removed the old bearing and when I cleaned the flywheel I found a ring at the bottom.

The old bearing is complete so the ring is not from it.
In my imagination it could either be leftovers from a previous bearing change and that they didn't tap in the new bearing properly.
- Or maybe there was a fix for something, maybe they wanted to get the bearing out to stabilize the shaft more or something like that.

The bearing is 0.550in (13.98mm)
The depth of the flywheel is 0.551in (13,99mm)
The ring is 0.049in (1.25mm)

* The brown on the flywheel is WD40 as rust protection.
* The flywheel is said to be specially made during a temporary collaboration between Volvo and IH where Volvo bought a Perkins engine and IH gearbox.

Well I just proved in another thread that my memory is not to be trusted. Maybe my math is no better. Bearing wasn't seated. Don't believe it will make much difference if ring is in there or not. Quite possible a case of "I wondered what happened to that ring".

Shaft worn? And the spaced the bearing out to grab some fresh meat? Although that little ring doesn’t seem like much

Good idea to check the driveshaft I couldn’t feel or see any wear, and the old bearing wasn’t close to the end.
