Gabriella Cook Posted May 18 Posted May 18 the exhaust manifold is cracked and the intake's heat control mechanism is shot and burned a hole where the spring goes, it will run ok for about a half hour then loses power, do y'all know where to go to get a new one that wont bust my budget? Quote
Jeff-C-IL Posted May 18 Posted May 18 I assume gas! That manifold is pretty common - fits everything from a 460 to a Hydro 86 - so you can likely get a used one if you looked. I found one from a 460 locally for the 656 rebuild I was doing. Just asked an IH guy I knew. Lots of sources for new - Steiners, All States, Redrunrite. Even Ebay. You just need to chose if you need the exhaust manifold alone, or the entire intake/exhaust with a new riser flap. For what you said above, sounds like a whole new manifold is the answer. 1 Quote

The 560 exhaust hole is offset different than an 06/56. If you're ok with chopping up your hood than any 6 cylinder gas manifold will work. If you like your hood, you're going to have to find a 560 manifold. I also think the 460 and 656 used a smaller exhaust pipe. 1 Quote
Jeff-C-IL Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Correct - When I typed the above, brain glitched and thought OP had a 460 instead of a 560. What I found was: the 460 & 656 Gear used the smaller pipe & muffler, but the 656 Hydro used the larger one. The 06/56 manifold is clearly larger - with larger ports all the way thru. Owner chose to put the used smaller 460 exhaust on - as he didn't care about a couple more HP for a lot more money. The used 460 manifold was straight up - and fit the 656 hydro utility correctly - if smaller that the original. Apparently, there is only 1 new replacement style - the larger 06/56 type. There is an "offset" fitting for the 560 - https://www.steinertractor.com/IHS1236-Offset-Exhaust-Manifold-Adapter 1 Quote

Matt Kirsch Posted May 20 Posted May 20 There isn't a specific exhaust manifold for the 460/560 anymore. You get the generic 6-cylinder exhaust manifold, and install an offset adapter to get the pipe to come out of the correct hole in the hood. As far as "won't bust my budget," what's the budget? You're going to have to spend SOME money, and a new manifold and gaskets will prevent some headaches during installation and in the future. There's a certain minimum amount you're going to have to spend. Long story short, they're all the same no matter who you buy from. All made in the same overseas factory, shipped over in the same sea can(s) and distributed to whomever desires to sell them. There are dozens of places that sell them which show up in a quick google search. So, my recommendation is to buy using whatever criteria you deem important. Buy from the cheapest place. Buy from the place you like to do business with. It's all up to you. Above all, quit running the tractor before you do permanent damage. Burned valves, scored pistons... that's an overhaul. Quote
brahamfireman Posted May 20 Posted May 20 The bigger issue is why does it quit after an hour. I highly doubt a crappy exhaust manifold is your problem. Quote
Jeff-C-IL Posted May 20 Posted May 20 If the manifold is bad enough that its putting hot gases down into the intake area, it could be a vapor lock issue. But I agree - whats up with that? Quote
560Dennis Posted May 21 Posted May 21 Good comments mention I had old spark plug wires (not copper ) that would start to fail after 15 minutes of running on the car. After awhile they just quit. They looked great but stiff. They gave irratic timing when use timing light. Did you do a fuel flow test after the half hour when runs bad ? Ignition coils get real hot to touch if failing i had a new condenser on farmall C magneto act up after 15 minutes. look at spark plugs electrodes for to rich to lean . You idle a lot with engine? ,heat range of spark plug may be way off .pre ignition. some stuff that baffled me. clean the points contacts get the oxidation off them . what work was done recently need to go back to that also .Look for when the whale jumped into the swimming pool temperature gauge working ? . Matt Kirsch Posted June 15 Posted June 15 Long story short there is no no-cost, twist-of-a-screwdriver solution here. Start with new manifolds. If it's all rotted and leaking you could be running lean which is bad in and of itself. You could already have a burned valve or three which is causing your loss of power. Quote

acem Posted June 16 Posted June 16 I know little about your specific engine but I have worked on alot of engines down through the years. A spark fired engine needs compression, fuel and spark to run. Check your compression while cold and after it's started acting up. This may not work right because it is cooling off when you shut it off. So go ahead and run the compression test but also check the vaccum while cool and warm/acting up. Diagnosing with a vacuum guage takes some judgment but it's a good tool. Ideally the compression will be within spec and the vacuum will be smooth and steady. Verify you are getting fuel into and through the carburetor properly. Fuel bowl level, jets/passages, properly sealed (fuel and vaccum leaks). Check your spark for strength and timing. Generally I recommend you have your wife hold the sparkplug in her hand, properly hooked up to the distributor and wire. Then if she screams while you're cranking it you probably have good spark. However since you're a lady that probably won't work... probably have decent spark since it starts but I'd still check it. Ground the plug on the block and crank it. The spark should ideally be blue not yellow. You could check this when it's acting up too. You can pull a spark plug wire off a spark plug on a running engine. It just hurts, kinda like an electric fence. Check timing with a timing light at low idle governed speed (full RPM). Again be sure to test it while it's acting up. I have had some wine so I hope it came out right! Jesus turned the water into wine! 1 Quote
