Bought a new gas manifold that's out getting ceramic coated. Since I plan on my city born and raised grandsons driving this tractor, fenders are going to be a must, not an option. Diesel Doctor Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Put on your "Round-to-it" project list is the water plate behind the carburetor. Yours is probably original and is normally rusted away inside. When off, clean the junk out of the block and replace the plate. Will help it cool better. Glad to see another H in it's work clothes. 1 Quote

This sounds like a good thing to do now. I have the new manifold out getting ceramic coated, so that entire side of the engine is exposed. I "assumed" that cover was for the lifters, never realized what it was actually for until now. Lifter cover is on the other side! Didn't know that. Since I'm this far along, would it be better to just replace the whole thing? Fred is staying in his work clothes, but I am throwing them in the washing machine. LOL 2 Quote

It has happened to me bringing customers tractor into shop. When pushing clutch and brake pedals at the same time. You tend to pull on steering wheel to keep yourself upright. When steering wheel suddenly comes at you. Your feet come off the pedals and you tip off the back of the seat. Bolt through the washer and in the keyway prevents that. 1 Quote

This is one of those very simple but genius things that some engineer came up with. I put that washer in many times and never really knew why it was there. And now it makes perfect sense. Quote

I felt secure on that tractor. I sold that tractor for a 51 M. The seat pan on the spring, and low fenders still give me shivers a little. I work for a tree cutting company. 4 years ago I was at a different company. I was parked on the street with a dump truck hauling a skidloader. Strob lights and hazards on, safety vest, cones, and sign out. I was next to the trailer had my head down untwisting the chain binder. A high school driver drove through the cones, partly on the trail, came down and ran me over and dragged me 10 ft when I was trying to run away. We always had monthly safety meetings at work and discussed stories like those that happen somewhere and you always think " no not me, I'm safe, I'm smart, I do everything right" but it can be you, your brother, husband, or son. With that said you can be the safest person and do everything right and if something is going to happen it's going to happen ( the only thing the lights, cones, vest, and sign helped me with was the insurance couldn't accuse me of not being visible). You can drive yourself nuts looking at worse case scenario and playing what if's, or you do what you want to do and try to be smart about it. 1 1 Quote

Crazy that literally seconds before,the other guy helping me had his back turned pulling down the ramps...... could've been crushed .I never usually have help unloading, and always folded down the ramps last incase something like this would've happened ......not saying the trailer could push me down and pin me either. You think you're " safe" with cones and signs but they're not cement barriers. Sadly this wasn't a wake up call to my employer on road safety at all. At my current job I make sure to have a blocker vehicle behind me, or have the truck facing oncoming traffic to block me, and stand on the deck......even though the kid went up on the trailer in my experience. It was crazy how much investigation went into the accident, drone footage, calls to the national weather service for sun measurements, any little paint chip or broken pieces of the pick up truck was circled in the street. The dot talked to my employer. 1 guy said to have binders on the passenger side, but then another guy said you'd still be pulling the chain through on the opposite side. They also suggested flipping the truck around like I do now, but in most cases if something happens you were parked " illegally "......which a fine is better than your life. I was at 0 fault though in the investigation. It's sad how sleazy insurance companies are. I was up in the air going to a truma center and what was left of my phone rung......a few days later after I listened to the voicemail. It was the kids insurance " hey buddy we heard what happened, we need a statement from you, we want to know if you had cones out and neon ppe,and also just to let you know your vehicle was too big to be parked there, and our client was blinded by the sun and that's an act of God so he's not at fault" I knew then and there I needed a lawyer. They called when I was out of it and loopy so they were hoping I'd forget something in my statement, and they were hoping I didn't have cones out to say " you didn't protect yourself"......not that that gives anyone the okay to run someone over though. It's been almost 5 years with 3 surgeries and I'm not 100% the old me, but a new me with a better aspect of life, and if most days I have to limp or grind my teeth I feel pretty fortunate. Almost 5 years and finally having court. Name of the game is never leave the house mad, don't go above and beyond for your employer, and always cover your back. 1 Quote

KillDevilBill Posted February 28 Author Posted February 28 Got it running again, but I have fuel running out of the carb. All I did was clean 80 years of crud off, now the float is stuck (a guess). Can anyone tell which carb this is by looking? Going to order a rebuild kit, but I know they put several different carbs on these. This is a distillate tractor . Quote

I'm really liking this. I did the same thing with my SMTA, put new vinyl decals on. I cleaned the surface with CLR. Then sprayed clear coat over the area to seal it. Applied the decals. It’s been going on 6 years now and they’ve held up fine. I think the clear was a matte finish so it doesn’t stand out. But I didn’t have any paint left. I just sprayed the area under the decal, not all of it. 2 Quote

Talking of JD fenders on IH tractors, these are on my 450 - I don't think they look too bad... but if I ever remove the wide front and go to a narrow, the fenders will probably go.
