Brother in law was pushing brush in a pile to burn,he is dumb like all brother in laws.He got it caught tween gears flames boiling up the sides of my NEWLY PAINTED M which I did.I wasn't there,my brother for once was useful, jumped on and somehow got it out.Blowing corn silage years later at night on my dairy that old M exhaust pipe glowed red.I ground corn all day with it with the belt pulley and stationary JD hammermill. It would always start on 3 turns on the motor. My dad called it old faithful and kept it at one of the farms that it was needed to push wagons in or anything you need a tractor for in the 70's. The 1951 which is the better running tractor, my dad is beginning to tear down to restore. The 1950 which is the one with blowby we are going to keep original because the paint is in very good shape and it still has the original dealer tags from allegan michigan. Once we are done working on the other tractors I would assume we will put a set of rings in the 1950. 1 Quote

They are lambert brakes yes. Aftermarket discs. Got em on my 51. They work but you really gotta stand on the pedals. If it's feasible they might go back to bands at some point. 1 Quote

If it's feasible they might go back to bands at some point. My M with the Lamberts is a parts tractor with a stuck engine so I've never really used the brakes. I had my dad pull the tractor with me on it from where I bought it to my place about 8 miles away. I never got the brakes to work. Had to leave the tractor in 5th gear, hold the clutch down and when I needed to slow down I let up on the clutch pedal a little. It wasn't a fun ride home! 2 Quote

DWV Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Maybe some answers to questions in posts. IH started disc brakes on M serial number 294226 and MD 285505. First M built in Callender year 1952 was 290923. First one March 1952 was 295555. Last regular M was serial 298219. Band brake housings will use the late M and SM disc brakes in enough parts are changed. Owners of some SM tractors with broken housings replaced with band brake housings. when SM parts were used the differential carriers bolted to same holes it housing as band brakes used. Disc brake housings bolt to the differential carriers instead of transmission housing. Without a doner disc brake tractor you need to gather up several parts to put on a band brake M. Band actuating shaft and bolt holes can be seen after discs installed. Even though Disc started at a lower serial number for a MD than other fuels they were both built in February 1952. Can't remember now but the past a reason was given for MD production slow down near end. 1 Quote
