Opinions on IH 574

There is a 574 for sale not too far from me, about 60 miles or so. It has a 340 DuAl loader that looks to be in really nice shape (just going by pictures), but not a loader that I'd want on that tractor. It sits way too far forward for my liking. It has what looks like very good Firestone rears and good looking Firestone 3 ribs up front. It has a 3 point and power steering. The ad doesn't say whether gas or diesel, and the pictures aren’t clear enough to tell by looking, by myself anyway. Gas or diesel on a small utility like that doesn't make a lot of difference to me. The loader would come off and go on my Hydro 70 since I already have a 340 that has been welded some and has leaking cylinders on that tractor. I've been wanting a utility for mowing with a 6 foot bush hog type of mower (mine is a Mowhawk). I know area makes a difference on value. Since I have really no experience with the utilities I'm wondering what your thoughts are on a good price for a 574.

Most important things:

Check if the brakes work well. They are usually the biggest problem. They can get spongy, or just not work at all. Expensive to fix.

Check all the fluids, especially the transmission fluid.

Check how sloppy the shift linkages are. They tend to wear out, then get hard to shift or get in gear.

Check operation of the clutch and steering, being a loader tractor.

Early 574's had a dual 540/1000 rear PTO like a 1066, later ones just had a rear 540 with an optional 1000 side-mount. Looks like that one is a later one. Not a big deal unless you need the rear-mount 1000. 

Check both undersides of the fuel tank to see if it is rusty. Water tends to collect in the bottom of the tank and rusts it out.

See if the parking brake works they are commonly left on and burned up. May not matter to you, but to the next person it might. Also expensive to fix.

The gas engines are sleeveless if that matters to you. To some people that's a big deal, some don't care.

I guess that's some of the main things I would look for.

In good running condition it could go anywhere from 5 or 6,000 to 10,000 dollars, it really depends on the overall condition and hours.

I have a 685 that I have about 6 grand in.Good little tractor for what you want to use it for and I agree totally with information given by fellow poster above on what to look for on these machines.

They were very popular here before skid loaders took over.  Still a good little utility type tractor.  Agree on all of the above.  Everything is fixable, it just effects value.  If original that one looks really good in the pictures except for the goofy loader that needs to come off.

That loader isn't well suited to the tractor. It would come off and be put on my Hydro 70.

I grew up on 574's and 674's, dad bought a 574D new and later traded it for a 674D. Later he bought a 574 Gasser with a 2200 loader, I didn't like that one as much mostly because of the grass burner undershot exhaust. They were all good reliable machines back in those days.

Dad bought a new 574 in 78, with a Dunham Lehr 22 loader. Not sure what year it was but it was sitting on the dealer lot when he bought a feed lot. It was a gasser. Good little tractor for loader work and brush hogging. The loader came off and we used it for sowing wheat in the fall and again for beans in the spring. He had it until 85, and I don’t remember the hours on it when it left. Guessing between 25-3000 and I don’t remember any issues with it.

I had a 574 diesel. My first tractor my wife and I bought as our own.Great tractor did far too much work with it but it was our biggest tractor,newest tractor on our dairy farm starting out.I put a Dunahm loader on it many years later but never liked it on it.Too much weight to far forward. 

Great tractor I would have another one.
