Hydraulic cylinder reseal.

Ok. Moving around enough to give the 500c loader a bit of tlc. Bought the seal kit and started on one side this evening. Retaining  ring came out fine. Cap turns by hand but only came out about 1/4 of an inch. Turning it with a wrench and prying with a small bar doesn't do much.....

Can I use the hydraulic pressure of the loader to push the cap off the barrel ? 

Or is it best to try and pull the rod out with a chain around the eye and hopefully pull cap off with it ?

I have done it both of those ways with similar cylinders. There are downsides to both. If you push it apart with the hydraulics it makes a huge mess. If you try pulling it apart with a chain the sudden release when it breaks free can be a bit violent and depending on how far it flies out, and what it lands on can damage the rod, gland, threads etc and make you regret it.

I'd spray plenty of PB Blaster or something comparable into the locking ring hole to loosen and crusty crud first before trying either method. It may allow you to work it back and fourth with a wrench and have your buddy pull by hand to have some outward tension while you do it.

Pulled a John Deere backhoe swing cylinder apart (still mounted in machine) using a lifting rigging strap and my pickup. Although I was gentle when it broke free it launched a couple feet and the gland struck the backhoe swing taking a chunk out of the gland casting. Cost me a trip to the machine shop. Thankfully they could save it, but I'm leery of this method now and lay down something soft for it to land on or hit.

Its currently soaking Over night. Will try putting a little  pulling pressure on the rod side while turning the cap. Or...I'll use the rod as a slide hammer  and see it that pops it out

I have used air to push such things apart. Less than 200 PSI is lot less than using machine hydraulics. Also a cable come along is less violent than hocking the pickup to it.

I hate that style of cylinder. They are great to assemble when everything is clean, but taking them apart after years of work is awful.

Got it ! Used the piston rod as a slide hammer

Well...not a bad job. The spacers that go on each side of the gland were too thick. I used one from the new kit and one from the old parts. Buttoned it up and no leak ! The lift cylinder seal is next but that will wait till the loader arm is swapped out. Be a lot easier and safer to work on that with the arms removed  anyhow.
