I looked online and it gives me mixed answers So my question is; first off should I run SAE 30 oil in it or 15w40 and how much do i put in . Im thinking its 11 quarts or (10.4 litres). Am I right ? Thank you for the help, Travis. Definitely run 15W-40 diesel engine oil (like Shell Rotella T4), unless you are constantly operating in cold climates. As for oil capacity, I don't know that answer. I would just buy about 12-13 quarts and start filling it until it's full. Run it and then recheck. Filter housing will probably take a quart or too. Then you have some left over just in case. The injection pump oil is a seperate sump too, and that also should get changed every oil change. Oil for that is whatever you run in the engine. I know you said you don't have a manual, but I would greatly recommend getting one. They are very informative and not that expensive. Good luck! Quote

Yes I plan on getting a reprint manual. Im in Canada so I had 5w40 oil in it to get running during the winter time. I also work out of a garage that has wood for heat. I dont plan on running it in the winter so 15w40 rotella is what I'll put in, as thats what I run in all my more modern diesel engines . Thanks, Travis 1 Quote
Lars (midessa) Posted June 3 Posted June 3 My guess would be IH recommend straight 30 weight Diesel engine oil. Something like Mobil Delvac 1230, or Chevron Delo 400 would work just fine. Todays ‘modern’ Diesel engine oils are formulated to play nice with DEF, regen, and diesel catalytic converter emission systems, some people claim these new oils lack the necessary additives our old IDI engines require. Where you at ? im north of edmonton alberta. it looks pretty much the same as yours, with nice tin. i got a nice 650 also. plus a nice low hr wd9. got a super wd 9 but not running yet. got a very nice original w9. plus a bunch of others. 1 Quote
td9bcf180 Posted June 12 Posted June 12 The Super WD9, 600 and 650 IH tractors have the same engine as the TD9-91 series dozers- D350. I have 3 of these dozers but one is the older TD9 with D335 engine. For summer I am using straight SAE 30 oil. 11 quarts is right. Give it a good cool down especially in hot weather as these are known to crack heads easy. 3 Quote

They need straight 30 weight ( hot climate 40 wt) Dont use multi grades in those old engines..I have a 600 as well.I prefer that weight in several of my old IH,s gassers too. I am also in Alberta,east of Edmonton. Quote
