I live in an irrigated area with some vegetables grown as row crops - mostly tomatoes. As a boy I can recall the tomatoes being cultivated with small tractors - Ferguson TEA20, IH B250/275 with linkage mounted cultivators. These tractors had their wheels set right out and the wheels dished out to allow them to straddle several rows. Tomatoes are now grown using drip tape for irrigation and plastic mulch to control weeds. No cultivation now only spraying to control weeds. Quote

I think most of the well known companies had a good offering of small tractors for gardens and small farms. I doubt anybody has heard of this one though. I think the date was about 1949 when this "Haas Atomic" tractor was offered here in Canada. Quote

The 730 and 830 John Deeres were quite popular around here. By 1961 the biggest Case available was the 83 horsepower 930 as seen in this ad. Quote

They had worked together for the HV McKay company building harvesters and farm equipment. Connor-Shea built and marketed a range of cultivation and seeding equipment. Their machines were generally well-engineered, reliable and suited to Australian conditions. The disc being advertised in this ad is typical of their machines. Quote

I have seen the Nuffield tractors advertised here in the farm magazines in the sixties but can't recall seeing an actual tractor. Some companies offered a very complete line of equipment including almost everything a farmer could need. Cockshutt even offered milk cooling and freezing equipment for the dairy farmers back in 1949. Quote

Another Conner-Shea ad for a harvester they developed. The tractor was fitted to the machine for the harvest and was then available for other tasks after harvest. There are still a few of these in use and it takes about a day to fit the tractor. There a series of cables, rods and linkages from the operators platform of the harvester to the tractor control. The harvester has the grain tank on the full length of the left side and the threshing/seperating mechanism on the right. Straw and chaff comes out just behind the right hand drive wheel. The middle of the harvester is open allowing room for the connecting cables, rods and linkages. The cutting front is lifted parallel to the machine and is able to be lifted high enough to clear fences. Quite an innovative machine that was able to produce a very clean sample of grain. Many farmers left a tractor permanently attached. Quote

Very interesting photo and idea. I have seen similar ideas here but older machinery. Seems to me Ford offered a combine to attach to their Fordson tractor way back when. I don't have any information handy. On this Connor Shea unit I see the tractor runs in reverse. Would this not severely limit the range of speeds? Most tractors of that era had maybe 2 speeds in reverse which does not give much flexibility for harvesting. Here is a more conventional design from 1937 Minneapolis Moline. Loadstar, the drive of the Connor-Shea harvester is arranged so that the forward gears of the tractor are used to drive the harvester forward - with the tractor going backwards. It is strange to watch as the sprockets on the tractor rear axles are rotating in the opposite direction to travel. Quote

That one looks like quite a bit of work attaching and removing the tractor and I would think they would have a 'dedicated' combine tractor to leave on it all the time. From what I have read on the subject, Cockshutt engineers were working on this rotary design way back in 1959. When White went bankrupt in 86, the rotary combine technology and design was turned over to Massey Ferguson. Quote

Loadstar Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 That Chameberlain is a big solid looking tractor. The disc plow(tiller) is well built machine with those spring cushions for every disk. Looks better than the ones we had here. This is just an old ad for IH axial flow combines from 1982. Notice the pull type 1482. Quote

The model 161 swather (windrower) was available with the air cooled Wisconsin V4 or optional liquid cooled (likely IH) engine. The self propelled was a little more expensive and complicated than the pull types but it gave you the freedom to cut up and divide your fields any way you wanted without running over crop with the tractor.
