Update on my Eng over haul on my magnum 7220 pro

what I have found so far

pistons have a lot of carbon around the crown above the top ring that has noticeable scoring in it and the liners have visible scores in them but they can’t be felt rings are quite loose in there grooves

the oil thermostat in the cooler has worn and come apart

oil cooling jets 2 of them were slightly blocked on 1&5 something hard flew out when poked with a piece of wire in a reverse direction

upper big ends showing wear through several layers but not bronzed everything else like new crank mics fine it has been running with the wastegate blanked but never gets hot on the EGT I know there can be mixed views on this

so on to parts would like to rebuild with quality parts have been dealing with my Cummins supplier he is having trouble getting a kit

putting it together separately is very expensive as in 7000.00 GBP Cummins only have 10 piston kits in Singapore which could be 10-12 weeks away

CNH want 1000.00 per cylinder liner kitKMP brand prices are a lot cheaper and state quality parts I have dealt with them before on parts and haven’t been disappointed yet anybody have any thoughts on this

Keystone rings gonna be loose in the grooves , as both the rings and groove are tapered

actually that carbon buildup at the top of the piston  is intended as a heat shield for the rings
it can break off in chunks with high EGT or no warm up or cool down periods

While I have never purchased a full rebuild kit, I have been happy with PAI for the odd 466 part (and unhappy with Navistar and CNH for price AND quality).

Don’t use the kit from Case IH it’s Reliance and you will get to do it again . Go to a Cummins Truck dealership and order sleeves and pistons from them . Your CPL number won’t cross o er but I have a cross over book from Cummins that will get you the truck side part numbers so you can get stuff from them .  If you know of a person with a truck that 1991 to 1998 you can use there CPL number off the engine tag and order everything from Cummins 👍

Yes Danny I have been dealing with my Cummins guy he has identified it but is telling me that there aren’t any rebuild kits available globally which he quoted 4500 and sourcing parts individually instead of taking a box off the shelf with everything in it somehow adds another 3000 to the price also he is having piston issues

Why did you take it down , was it using oil or scored cylinder ? I would be honing those cylinders, clean those pistons up and re ring it if the pistons look good . You have better parts than you will get new from any of the aftermarket stuff . Those motors make 20,000 hours  before  major work . I have seen head bolts break off in the right rear corner several times and have head gaskets leak and the early motors with the bad pistons from the factory I have seen a bunch of those fail , otherwise those motors are darn tough .

It had a slight knocking noise under load you could ease off the throttle it would disappear you could kind of play the throttle to find the knock so thought prevention was better than cure it’s done around 10000 hours which is not a lot for that Eng I know

I have owned it 5 years but of course you dont know it’s previous history

Guys are hitting Case IH combines in the head and you can buy a good used motor out of one . 3500.00 is a good deal and these motors normally don’t have many hours on them and they have had the oil changed and checked 👍  I would tell you to go that route might be way easier than wondering what kind of new junk parts and doing it all over again .

Better check your front damper pulley timing marks. Make sure rubber layer between inner and outer pulley elements is in good condition. 

I would suggest an Interstate McBee or PAI overhaul kit. Would agree that Cummins does not support this age of engine as good as we think they should. 

It is somewhat our own fault, going with aftermarket parts, dropping sales numbers for the OEM until they start discontinuing said parts. 

This coming from a guy who has maintained a Cummins dealership for over 25 years. Years ago we stocked and sold Cummins parts for the B & C series engines. Including new and / or recon engines. Built many irrigation units, gensets and repowered lot of Oliver and White tractors.

Now that ship has sailed, it would cost well over 50K to built an irrigation unit today using a new engine, complete with serialized exhaust aftertreatment system.

Yes front damper is ok I fitted a new one maybe 2 years ago still looks good

My other line of thought is maybe a diesel knock i have tested injectors and are all good but will have pump and inj serviced whilst at this stage looking at the piston tops you can see heat marks where the fuel has been sprayed in almost as if it’s slightly missed the firing bowl not sure if that’s normal just a thought

And the saga continues taking advice from cihtech  I have been trying to find parts from PAI or mcbee

 finally got someone to message me back and have now sourced McBee parts which are said to be available only the down side being they have quoted me shipping to uk at 2358.00 usd and I will be subject to more tax and duty at  uk customs kind of taken the shine off some what which leaves me with only one other option of KMP brand parts which are already in the uk but my Cummins guy has put me off slightly as he has had a bad experience with them what to do any bright ideas?
