I'll bug him again and see if he knows the answer but I usually miss his call back. Both parts engine and my dozer engine the sleeves were flush to top of block. Side by side only difference is the top flange on my engine measured. .18 and the good parts sleeve measured .22. Naturally I checked this after installing cylinder#1 sleeve and noticing it protruded. So do I spin these 3 have down to be flush,(can they be machined) or do I now just have a protruding sleeve? Crap. I was about to order my parts and get bolting it back together. Thank you for the leads and help Without looking in the manual...? The 282 family has different specs/and different parts/gaskets. Can you check for clean bore lips and shims like 282.... Quote
highprarie Posted July 7, 2024 Author Posted July 7, 2024 I don't know. I've got a shop manual but I didnt see reference to the different sleeve kits, or how they may have changed. I know mine is a 1949, never confirmed year of the parts machine but all other parts seem to measure the same. (Piston, rings, sleeve od/id) Just seems odd sleeves were flush in both of their original blocks. Love a good puzzle Quote
mmi Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 Yes I see the details missing pg110 ph 162..... MB CAT would have known...(if not covered here?) Quote
highprarie Posted July 8, 2024 Author Posted July 8, 2024 Thanks mmi. I didn't think to look for shims in the block. I don't imagine there's any in there but I'll certainly check tomorrow. Quote

Or sticking to your sleeve....or different step height /x part like the 282 family Quote

Sleeve protrusion .039-.047. in the write up it says not to exceed. Hopefully your findings of .18-.22 are missing a zero and are .018 and .022. if so I would go for it. Not sure how the gsk should fit to the sleeve. No fire rings on dry sleeve engines. Dennis Quote
Tad Wicks Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 In the TD6 there are 3 different types of sleeves and their protrusion. One sleeve has no protrusion and the copper ring is in the gasket, one has a step protrusion so the sleeve contacts the head and the gasket sits on the step in the sleeve and the last one the whole of the sleeve is protruded and the gasket fits around the outside of it. I think the concern here is that you match the correct gasket to whichever set of sleeves you choose. 1 Quote
highprarie Posted November 4, 2024 Author Posted November 4, 2024 Thanks everyone for all the help! Finally got around to assembling it and she fired up strong the first crank over. Runs nice on diesel. Mighty black in the gas start, can't find any issues with the intake flappers, float, choke, etc. Tried the needle from a parts carb. Sure it's something stupid that I'll resolve with persistence.. Regardless. She sounds ready for another 70 year run. 5 Quote

I'll likely buy from him because I like supporting people that are old school, knowledgable and friendly. Pulled the old girl into the shop today and pulled it apart. Rear cylinder shattered top ring, all rings way worn and gap is excessive. 3 out of 4 sleeves pulled out with 1tap from the underside. Pistons look good but seem way too loose in the sleeves. Only have a bad set of calipers on me but I estimate .04 or .06 inch total slop. I read it should be .004, so I'm about 100x out of spec. Will pull what I had in my parts dozer, see if I can get good pistons and sleeves. 3 looked promising, 1 looked pretty bad. The sleeves and cylinders from Carrs run 1800. I'm burnt on chucking money at her. Anyone stateside have an ok sleeve? Standard size, flush to block and was upgraded to the 350 engine 4.5" bore. Thanks for all the input Still need parts?
