Women have been proven to have better fine motor skills, which really helps with TIG. Here are 2 I did last year, (i'm not a professional welder at all), it was my lucky day I guess... Just wait until you try repairing some old corroded trailer framing, an oil soaked gearbox case, or a leaking diesel truck tank. You’ll won’t think it is easy or fun. Welding new clean aluminum is something that I really enjoy, the rest of it, not so much, but it’s part of the job. 4 Quote

You can imagine the corrosion. Could kick your foot thru the frame. Quote

Had the pleasure and privilege of using the Miller welder today, going to say it was a big blue 400, but dont quote me on that because I may stand corrected.. my first time, although I'm certain it wont be the last. Helping to make a steel frame foot bridge.. (or hindering, cant be sure 😅) Almost everything I've been learning in college went totally out the window - this machine is far more powerful and I was working on far larger metal, I had to hold the gun completely differently to the way I'm used to and was taught, and swiftly realised that welding out in the big wide world is far different to my little breeze-less bay!! What a humbling experience that was. None the less, I had the very best tutor who also happens to be my favorite human, and thank God he is because if it was anyone else they'd have been told where to go😂... anyway, after a slightly rocky start and large dose of reality, I found my feet - then it was time to pack up and head home, of course!! A Sunday afternoon very well spent and what a brilliant finish to my birthday weekend! I'm so grateful for the time I had, the experience/tips and pleased to say I'm still very much in love with welding and just as excited as I was back in December, if not slightly more anxious at how much there is for me to learn 😂 5 Quote
CRVB91 Posted March 24 Author Posted March 24 I laid some of the best stick welds I've ever laid!! 😍🔥 I've been practicing at home in the garden quite a bit, nothing crazy - just running 3.2mm 6013 Bohlers on 4mm steel at around 130amps - I've played around with the amperage a little just to see what difference it makes but I'd say 130 is the sweet spot for what I've got here right now. I've ordered some 7018s and thicker steel offcuts to play around with too. Going to try some fillet welds today now that bead on plate is going smoothly 🤞 5 Quote

CRVB91 Posted Thursday at 06:46 PM Author Posted Thursday at 06:46 PM Got some great news, I have been struggling recently to find an apprenticeship placement alongside what would be my college place - had a meeting at the college this morning and they're happy to place me onto their level 2 course in the welding center of excellence and put my details into their "Talent Pool" which means I'll be one of the first in line when local companies register any vacancies. Its taken a bit of weight off of my shoulders to be honest as its been getting me down ontop of everything else! So for now, I'll be doing my level 2, focusing in the short term primarily on pipe and plate welding and getting a temporary seperate job to get by while I wait things out. Hopefully things will get better from now 🙏 8 Quote
