Oh the good old days before I had a swather. He did know how to make a square corner.

We cut 600 acres of hay last year and all we have are sickle mowers and haybines

We used 2 New Holland 495 12 foot haybines running behind Ford 5000 Diesels

Cut about 50 acres of hay with the IH Super W-6 and the 6 foot international sickle mower [I got the sickle mower form the man who used to own the international dealer in my town from the 1940's to the early 70's]

cutting with the sickle mower was slow. but I enjoyed every minute of it

I bought a swather in 1982. And have not cut a blade of grass with a sickle bar since.  But still something about watching the cutter bar and the crop falling over. When the crop is cutting clean like shown here.

But this guy would of been chastised for the big sloppy turns, in my neighborhood. I guess since this looks perennial you would get in trouble for the skid turns we made in grain hay.

I learned on an 8n Ford with mid mounted mower.  So you made loops, but cleared the cut lifted and cranked all at the same time. Then an JD A, which in good clean ground you never raised the bar but an inch or 2, on a 90 degree turn. Crank the wheel and stomp the brake. The bar is never out of the cut but seconds,  and a perfectly square corner😉 when the operator  was on his game.
