Surprisingly I can’t seem to source the grill screen for our 1026. I’ve tried the usual companies that serve older IH tractors & can find plenty for the 06 & 66 series but so far nothing for a 1026. My guess is that the 1256 would be the same - but once again, no luck. Where should I be looking? Thanks!

Ok. After you pointing out the difference that’s been my experience. I have two tractors from that era & one with metal & one plastic. I think both aftermarket. Not sure why it appears so many need replacement - - here in southern Indiana with lots of trees, sure. But lots of Farmall land without a tree in sight. Thank you!

Just bought an IH 1026. While trying to decode the serial number I noticed that it appears that only the last 4 digits are useful? Can anyone explain why the numbers prior to the U seem to not really indicate much? I’ve seen 2610130, 2610150, 2610166, 2610167, etc. but only the last four digits are necessary? Good analogy on cost vs safety. With that being said I don’t want to way over pay unnecessarily. I recently saw a completed auction notice that bragged about selling older IH tractors. Three went for over $100K each with the high winning bid being $148K for a 1026. I like a good 1026 but don’t want to grossly overpay. Same concept with these bolts - I don’t mind paying high dollar for safety but don’t want to overpay by way too much. Thanks again for giving me a good price range to expect!

Thanks Bitty & Nate. Diagrams are very helpful. I’ll double check but I think the plates are 5 bolts each. Finding grade 8 bolts that are long enough is more of a challenge than I would’ve thought. But haven’t spent much time looking yet. - Jonathan

We’re working on doing the best quality restoration that we can on a 1256. Can anyone give the size & grade of the bolts used to mount a factory IH ROPS & canopy? Can anyone identify a source for where I can purchase the bolts? Thanks!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I first cleaned with Dawn liquid soap & then Mother’s NuLens cleaner. Crystal clear results.

Any suggestions on how to read the hour meter on a 1066 that no longer has a clear plastic lens? Is there a replacement for the lens? Is there a chemical similar to automotive head lights that can be applied to clear the lens enough to read the hours? Thanks - Jonathan

Thank you for the Precision contact. I ordered a water temp gauge today. On the tach - obviously I don’t need one. Only once have I seen a tach on a letter series & in the 40 years I’ve driven this SM I got by fairly well w/o a tach. Just thought it might come in handy - I cross check the tach on all my other tractors, trucks, aircraft, etc. Cheers, Jonathan

I have a ‘54 SM gas tractor. It’s a great running tractor - however the oil pressure & water temperature gauges haven’t worked in 30-40 years & of course no tach. So it’s about time to replace them. There are plenty of choices on the internet however I’d like to purchase a good quality set & do so only once. Any suggestions as to a source and specific model of gauges would be greatly appreciated. And does it make sense to take a tachometer from a 400-450 and mount it on my Super M (in an appropriate location). Thanks!
