Working on a '58 460 Utility LP and was checking plugs and noticed that this tractor has gasoline pistons in it after verifying the part number that I could see through the plug hole.  Should I be concerned about running it this way?  I've read some that exhaust temps can be affected by a mismatch, and also that I will be looking at about 75% of power output due to the lower compression.  Did the LP pistons have a different ring setup?

Many a gasoline engine has been converted to lp with no more than a tank, regulator and carb. And then there are the dual fuel. One carb in front of the other. Runs on which ever tank you turn on.

This isn't a conversion.  I understand it will run but was just wondering about performance.

It will not be up to full power but who needs it any more?

Most are used on mowers, loaders and light work.

Rarely is one worked hard pulling tillage.

You may grind a batch of feed and give one a work out.

Is it right, "NO".

Will it hurt anything, "NO".

The LP sleeve & piston overhaul, set of six, is 371089R91 (Out of stock thru Case/IH)

I doubt there is little difference in the rings between gas/LP.

You don't lose any over gasoline. You just are not taking advantage of the higher octane of lp. It's like running your lawnmower on 93 octane. You don't gain any power but you don't lose any either.

If the LP pistons raise the compression ratio, it's possible you might get some pinging (pre ignition knock) under heavy load. Pinging is when the air/fuel ignites from compression before the spark.

I have little experience with gas tractor engines but pinging can be a problem in higher compression gas engines.

You can help eliminate pinging by adjusting timing or running higher octane gas 

But it probably won't happen.

This originally is a LP engine. I just noticed that it has regular gas pistons in it now so someone swapped them at some point.
