Rear wheel weights

I found 2 sets of wheel weights for my 1950 farmall m for a pretty good price. I did some plowing with a 2 bottom oliver plow and it pulled it well in pretty dry soil. My dad is talking about getting a 3 bottom trailer plow to use for our m's. My tires would spin a bit pulling that 2 bottom up a hill that's pretty steep but the engine had plenty of power. You guys think with 2 sets of wheel weights on my m would be enough to pull a 3 bottom plow or should I consider put on 3 sets?

Stick with the two bottom unless they are 12 inch bottoms.

But if I happen to find a 3 bottom do you think I would be OK pulling it with 2 sets of weights?

Depends on your soil type and how deep. 300 pounds doesn’t add a whole lot.

When grandpa farmed with the M that I now own he pulled 3-14 with 1 set of weights and no fluid. Very black ND soil, not clay, and rolling hills, nothing steep. I have pulled 4-14 with the same tractor breaking for a shelterbelt. Didn't dig very deep though. Disked several times after plowing, plow again, repeat, digging deeper.

If (and this is very important) you set the plow up right and don't try to run it to China, your M will pull it fine with two sets of weights. When we had the SM, we pulled a 3-14 Case trip plow with only one set of weights and no fluid. Our ground isn't steep, but it's a rocky, sandy loam that pulls harder than you'd think. We ran in 3rd most of the time, but if it was a bit damp or frosty, or very dry, we had to run in 2nd. I pull a 3-14 311 Fast Hitch plow with my 450 in the same ground, and if I forget and try to plow 10 inches deep it struggles; keep it at the 7-8" mark, it pulls just fine.

We have pretty soft soil where I live in michigan. Im pretty sure we had the 2 bottom i was pulling down around 7 or 8 inches. Thanks for the info!
