No power

4:44 am, 1° above zero F. Snowing and wind blowing 23 mph, windchill -22°F. Of COURSE the power is going to go out!

That wasn't so bad...power was only out for about an hour and a half. Temperature dropped to -1°F. in that time. House was still at about 65 degrees.  The dispatcher I talked to when I reported the outage was one of my best friends from high school so it was nice catching up with him a little.

Looks like the power outage claimed our internet box...again. We have really good, fast internet, but it seems that there's about a 30%chance it isn't going to work after a power outage. And just about every time it happens they have to replace the power source box. Usually the company gives me an option to have a technician come on a weekend but not this time. No go until Monday. My internet hotspot on my phone will run the streaming tv for about 10 hours and I have an unlimited data plan so at least I have that option. Wife needs to do some online work for her job today so hopefully her hotspot will work to get that done. Sad how we have come to rely so heavily on internet for our daily lives!

I work for our local electric company and I can say that weather that cold will test the limits of small aluminum wire. It burns down because of load a lot in those conditions.

We put surge protectors and a battery backup on computer in barn.  Man thats been nice.  Parlor has milk meters and ID.  So even a power flitch id have to run and reset everything after getting gen going.

I don't know what it is. When we had tv through our phone company, we had set top boxes for each tv. I don't know how mamy set top boxes we went through but I'm sure it was at least 7 or 8. There'd be a lightning strike, then a snap and at least 1 box would be fried. We lost a couple of tvs that way too. Now we just have internet from the phone company and a landline that I keep just because everyone in the family knows the number since it was my grandma's number from the 70s and on. Tvs are all wireless to the router and we use roku now. Since we got rid of the set top boxes we haven't lost a tv to lightning. I think this will be the 3rd or 4th power supply/internet interface box that has fried. Although this time it wasn't lightning. I don't know for sure but if I had to guess I'd say a tree blew over and took the power lines with it. Something shorted out and a power surge took out the box. Everything else in the house works fine, just no land line and no internet. Phone company said it's almost always their box that fries when there is a power outage. We are the last place that gets power from this line and I don't know if it has anything to do with it but it seems like we always have problems like this. I'm just glad its the phone company's equipment that has a problem so it gets fixed on their dime!
