Hi guys I am 22 years old from Northwest Ohio. I am building my first international truck and made this topic to ask questions that I have, get opinions and post updates as the build progresses. I had an international Model 1955 it had a dt466 in it with a 5 speed transmission and a two speed rear end. The cab in this truck finally rusted away and wasn't safe to drive anymore. I found an international Model G-1954 truck that had a very nice cab, it didn't run or drive, had a gas motor in it with a 5 speed transmission and a 3 speed brownie box. At first the plan was to just swap the cab over to the Model 1955 but as I looked the G-1954 over I noticed it had a heaver rear axle, the front axles are wet hubs, it was double framed and the wheel base was 3' longer than the Model 1955. So my plan changed, I am now putting the drive train from the Model 1955 into the Model G-1954. I started in on pulling the cabs off the trucks and the drive lines. My plan was to run the dt466 with the 5 speed and still use the 3 speed brownie box because the rear end on the Model G-1954 wasn't a 2 speed rear end and I want to make sure I have plenty of low gears to get moving. I wasn't that familiar with the brownie boxes so I did some research and wasn't Impressed with the torque ratings on the brownie box, shifting them didn't look very enjoyable either. (The brownie box was a dana 5831-B). So back to the drawing board I went. I knew they put a 10 speed spicer transmission behind the dt466. So I got to looking around and found an eaton fuller 13 speed transmission for a very reasonable price and it was 20 mins away. I went to looked at it and brought it home. Now I have a dt466 a 13 speed transmission and 4.44 rear gears. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to gearing, that is where I get lost, I will have to drive it and see how goes, I am learning as I go. The motor is getting set in a couple days and the trans will get bolted onto the motor just temporarily as I need to get the flywheel resurfaced and a new clutch, but I also need to get dimensions for a drive shaft and find someone to make a drive shaft. That is where Im at now with this project. I do have a couple questions.
The questions I have are...
- What clutch is everyone running? Where did you get yours? Are the Meritor clutches from Napa any good?
- The Eaton 13 speed trans has an electronic pickup for the speedometer and the trucks used a cable drive. Has anyone done a conversion to make the speedometer work in the cab?
Thank you for reading the post, I look forward to hearing good constructive ideas from everyone that enjoys building trucks!
