Progress report on my 66 I.H. pick-up restoration

Recommended Posts

Pick up is basically finished and is at Upholstery shop !

I saw one of the leather skins he got in and is awaiting another . Upholstery will be Buckskin in color .  Seats on original frame, Door panels, Cab top.  I believe the rug will be of a Mercedes, Oat Meal color .

Schott wheels reported to Rob that wheels were done just needed to confirm correct color for inset.

They should be here next week.

We'll wait till its done at upholstery bring her back to Custom Concepts for wheels tires & alignment.   It was trailered to Upholstery.  I have it Insured through Hagerty  , But being I bought it out of state, DMV  requires me taking it in either on trailer or drive it with Arizona plates for total inspection before issuing registration.

I decided to hold off on pictures, now till its completed .

A side note : the upholstery shop does mostly Hot Rods and Customs , Fella told me that P.U. gets more attention then anything , Guys come in and say NICE ,OH ! ,WHAT IS IT?

Most say :we thought I.H. was Scouts and four wheel drives , never seen one of these. According to the shop man.

  Visited the binder today .

He is making the backboards for the door panels, kick panels and back of cab ,behind seat. roof top.

After all this time I am finally excited to the point can't wait to see it upholstered With wheels.

Every time I see it now , I just do not want to leave it.

We are using original seat frame but the seat upholstery will have a slight bucket seat effect and on sides ,frame arm to seat back, will be hidden.

It will have all leather  . Think what he proposes to do with rug & leather, the cab should be pretty quiet & solid sounding.

They could have at least put an IH in the center cap!!!

Not ruling it out . Rob has a place that can skin that cap then imprint I.H. however , I want to see them on there and finished before I do anything.

It may be in the Car show circuit the name Schott  may add more to truck then I.H. on caps .

Don't know ,but If I told you what those wheels cost and how they are made, you would understand what I am saying.

At this point the only payback I will ever see is in the plastic trophies from car shows. I have already had requests from two shows  here in Cali. to inter it because its one of a kind done to this extent .  It did not start this way but half way thru it was all or nothing. At this point now gotta go for the gusto .

But yes Jerry I.H. was my intent all along and its still on the hopper !

Tony. Not trying to rain on your parade but I tried the car circuit back in the 80s with a 1970 super bee hemi 4 speed (that I bought new). It didn't go well. Car show guys can really be mean in competitions. I got ganged up on and turned me from cars. One plus, that car funded my true love, tractors. Good luck to you!!

jerry

ps. To this day, I won't go to a tractor show with trophies. And I always go home with a smile on my face.

   Jerry ,

You are right, Those Car guys are ANAL ! Just like ROADIE"S  That was a bicycle roading club I belonged to when younger & full of Testosterone,  However, I am trying to get a pedigree to go with this truck if I can.

What I mean by that is ; My restorer goes to Sema Show every year . He sells his vehicles and flys home some years . My S.I.L. is a computer geek doing work for sema .

Rob , told me get a sponsor and go under his name . He said truck is flawless ,His words not mine, I figure Tony Ramos Farms, Inc. could sponsor it or some I.H. outfit could help.  If I get it in once it will carry that pedigree.,  Pleasanton ,Ca. is a show that is perhaps next to Sema in Northern Ca. and I've been asked to take it because they are looking for something different and been told that it would be well received.

I never, envisioned this but if my builder is willing to inter me and his confidence is to say flawless I'll give it a try .

My purpose was to preserve an undervalued 66 binder that I drove to school with a still wet drivers lic. That was my Dad's farm truck.

If I can get a light shown on it, I should go for it, but my love is tractors and it was done because of tractors.

BTW, I took tractors two years to a local church car show and received trophies both times . If you come out here I'll show you. The car guys would come buy and say :" we don't know sh*t about tractors but we know quality work and never thought someone would put that kind of work in a tractor"

So , my aim is to elevate a plain old I.H. binder while having fun doing it . If they laugh at me F**k them if they can't take it. I've probably got more it  then they do theirs.

I think my respect will come from Rob Fagundes  AKA Custom Concepts, name attached as the restorer.  He has a **** of reputation out here in Fresno area.

I'll try it now while its fresh, if they bully me and give me a black eye , I'll go to nearest college and play with the puppies and color pictures .

It's a beautiful pickup.

Take it to some shows.

I'm sure it will get the respect it deserves.

If the show is full of a**holes go back home, get the 1468 and plow em under.

Good thinking we'll show them what I.H. is all about !

SEMA is a thing all people in the car world should see once!  I been twice,  its mind blowing the amount of stuff that is there.  Your truck is a work of art Tony,  be proud of it.  Thanks for sharing the build of it.  Great choice on the rims.

Looking great Tony! I agree with Smoker1 about the car show people. They are snobbier than a bunch of high school girls. Clubs are a bunch of BS too. I was at a guys place last year and he was talking about an upcoming show that his club was putting on. They already decided who was getting the top trophy and the show was still weeks away...

My wife and i refer to those people as car snobs.

I have no hopes of being a beloved car guy, Don't want to ,I am a tractor guy.  ****, I've had my problems with tractor guys, I was told twice that my tractors should not be at a show because they are too shinny ! If They can't plow and be hosed down and brought to show they are no good ,I was told tractors were not made to be shinny.  All I said to Him after his tirade was," If I catch anyone hosing my tractors down I'll kill them"." After they are painted they never see water except if it rains on them" . "They are wiped down and waxed each time they are cleaned." lol. He and a few others shook their heads and called me an idiot, :o Which I will not argue with.

Guess what! the people that told me that, are gone and I am chairman next year of the show they wanted me banned from.

Clubs suck ,tractor or other wise . When I was Cycling , Those ass**es were the worlds worst, But I did it for 10 years , was doing it for myself.

I appreciate what you and Jerry are saying and you are right . However, If I can hitch a ride on Rob's shirt tail , I don't think many snobs screw with him, because he has done their cars at one time or another.

I just want to try to put a "Binder" in front of those guys, if I can, while its fresh and with Rob's help.

I agree with you. It could be a great thing for Rob and his shop. There are dicks that want to tear your stuff down because they dont have it. But there are also dicks that feel they are big shots because they have something in a show and wont talk to people when they have a question. If you are gonna show be prepared to be a nice guy to everyone...good ones and bad.

Just need to comment that "if I could buy your stuff for what I thought it was worth and sell it for what you thought it was worth, I would just retire"

   Your Right , New guy,

I love socializing with people :wub:Sometimes visit too much !

With tractors or Truck I prefer talking to people who do not have or do not think they can have , Can't afford or do not have the talent , Because I was that Guy until 2007 when I started little by little with much help and school of hard knocks .  Never thought I would have the time or the money to do this , yet it happened .:o

So my message to them if I could do it , You can do it.

At this point its about people more then the tractors or truck ,

Steaks and wine will be shortly!  Take em to that Grapevine place in Visalia after he get the 806 going.

Go to SEMA, you deserve to show your 'investment' off.  Different things always get attention at car shows.  If you can get me a couple tickets i will keep a eye on her for you! ;)  I guess its a invite/industry only thing....bucket list.

BTW , On first pic with Danny & Bob, If you look to the left of them ,that is the roll of leather that he ordered for it.

Its kind of like a M.M. prairie gold, not quite as brite.

On about the sixth pic down you see the speakers. They were to go behind seat in cab corners but not enough room , so they are built into the seat frame.  The green seats are from the donor truck.  Its amazing I bought the donor for the engine & tranny Bed was rotted out and truck was in junk condition . The one being restored came out of Arizona ,looked pristine for its age, Yet, the amount of stuff coming off that Virginia salt ridden Pick up  was amazing. The seat frame on mine was sprung and they could not get it to run back & forth on slides and the green was perfect. Door latches, hinges, Rocker panels, Lot of little stuff.

I also found that the four speed box from my six would not bolt to the 345. Thank goodness it had the 345 with four speed. Neither fuel tanks were usable ,had to make one.  Non of the brake drums were usable, Had to get a new set from Ford and machine them to work. JFYI
