1952 I/H T6 Crawler Project

Wow its been a while since I last posted anything.  In light of current events I got off my butt and got to work really tearing into the PTO and belt pulley attachment.  After almost a year of searching I have yet to be able to find the darn pulley itself (#264370 if anyone has one I will ecstatically take it off your hands).  So I bought a M Pulley and am going to take it to a machine shop tomorrow and see if they can make some kind of adapter that will allow it to mount to the attachment itself. 

 

The other half of the equation that I need to find is the PTO coupler itself part number 20117DA.  I didn't think much of it until I realized the internal PTO shaft is two different sizes.  The internal side is just slightly larger than the external making it require a nonstandard coupling.  Does anyone know if this particular coupling is specific to the T6/T9 or if M/H s also used the same coupler?

Tanker, the coupler 20 117 DA fits the T/TD6, it is different than the T/TD9, 49 548 D. You may have to have one made. Do you have the proper shaft (58 074 DBX) for the 6 series? If someone has a parts manual for the M/H they could tell you if it's the same part.

Woot heck froze over and I was able to find a salvage yard that had one!!!  I would be lying if I said I liked the price I paid for it but its still easier than having one made.  I do have the proper shaft and everything else just didn't think to make sure there was a coupling when I bought the PTO attachment.  Now its onto the machine shop, dropped the belt pulley attachment off today, gentlemen said it would take him a few weeks to get around to it so heres hoping.

I also replaced the water pump the darn thing leaked no matter how much grease or how tight the packing nut on it was.  I ordered a pump from Steiner, it is a modern set up that requires no maintenance, so far so good.

After I took it for a spin I put the rebuilt PTO and cover on it with a little help.

I have some touch up paint on order so I can paint over the part that was covered by the old cover plate.

Above is the result of all the tearing down.  They are currently marinating inside a massive parts cleaner my truck mechanic has.  Once all the crap is washed out of the inside of them I will send them and some of the other components off for sand blast and powder coat. 

I got a call from the machine shop I dropped the pulley off with saying it is ready, so fingers crossed he did a great job.  Ill post up some pictures of it when I have my hands on it.

The other project I get to do is replace all the track pad,s over a half inch of rubber has been worn off of them and the grousers are starting to hit the ground.  (I don't mind but I don't think Fort Sill would like it tearing up their roads....)  I have ordered more but due to current events they are not shipping anything, I replaced the worst ones with my spares because they where all in a row so should wear somewhat evenly.  (At least I hope they do.)

I have also been lazy and haven't put any progress pictures of Nellybelle in this thread as well, so here is a update on her.  I got the truck running to the point that it reliably starts and runs.  I converted it from 6 to 12 V for both ease of maintenance and give the starter some actual grunt.  I also put a new radiator in it as the old one leaked like a sive.

All 6 rims have new rubber on them, I was able to find a tire shop that was willing to take on the split rims.

 With all the new rubber installed and steady running engine I took it to a truck show that was near my grandpa and let him drive it around. (very slowly due to the fact that only the E Brake on the drive shaft worked.

I have a uncle that is huge into Dodge and Hudson and had a rebuilt 440 CI Big Block sitting in his garage collecting dust.  He got a very good deal on it but didn't have a use for it so was willing to sell it to me for what he paid.  At the truck show I was making arrangements with him when my dad overheard us and stepped in to buy it for me on the condition that the money I would have spent on the engine instead be spent on a new tranmission.

Prior to putting all that power into the truck I want to make sure it can stop so my current focus of work is the brakes.  The rear brake cylinders have been removed, honed, and sleeved so they should work better than new.  I have also relined the brakes shoes and had the drums machined.

Along the lines of brakes me and my mechanic decided against doing a axle swap on her.  We are instead going to machine the kingpin holes to a larger diameter that will allow the king pins from a P30 box truck to fit.  This will give it disc breaks on the front as well as easy to find service parts.  I have a vacuum powered master cylinder that will also go on.

I got the hub back from the machine shop and had it powder coated.  Holy crap do they look pretty, got it all put together and ready to go back onto the back of the tractor.  The only thing I need to do is have the pulley itself rebuilt, and that will begin after I get it in the mail tomorrow.017c4c02aa7736ae9ddc5fbcc206355af892ddbedc.thumb.jpg.b636a745d8b9431da6700370462b16d0.jpg

The insides are a little contaminated from being sandblasted as a final prep for powder so im going to put some throw away oil in it, run it, and drain it just to flush everything out.

I also got the front axle out from under Nellybelle and off to the machine shop.

The belt pulley assembly is attached and ready to rock and roll.  I have since put the pulley itself on as well, just haven't had a chance to take a picture of it.  Runs great with no issues (after I figured out how to adjust the shifting fork).

I have also made substantial progress on Nellybell, the truck I plan to eventually haul the T-6 around with.  Her disc brake conversion is complete as well as a slightly updated steering set up.  I have a few small things to fix but she should be driving around under her own power in a few weeks!!!!

Hope all is working on the updates to Nellybell. I have been involved in repairs to brakes on that vintage of truck before. Ran into problems trying to use anything but the original style booster. Probably easier to start fro scratch like you did than piece things together. But anyway hope you have success with it.

I like your upgrade on the big truck project. Seem for sure the right place to start.  Thanks for posting and sharing! Always great pictures too!

Wow a lot has happened since I last posted here, a very long story short, out of the army, job in Chicago, live on a hobby farm on the outskirts.

 

Got the pulley attachment put fully together and man I now understand why OSHA was created, that thing is scary. 

My neighbor was playing with his CAT near the creek and dug himself into a pickle.  He came over and asked if I could help pull him out.  The Irony wasn't lost on him that a old IH had to come to the bigger CATs rescue.01301d1aef22375f7e3a92ff1f36bf404754964bff.thumb.jpg.983035829df80fdc1167aece2910b6ea.jpg

I had to pull out some old tips and tricks I had learned the hard way from getting my Army tracked vehicles stuck, mainly chaining a log to the track.  Whats not shown is his newer tracked CAT skid steer that wasn't even able to get the monster to budge, let alone get any traction.  This little guy was activly digging its own trench, it was biting in so hard.

"I think I can, I think I can . . ." and the old girl could!  Nothing like the proper application of experience and equipment!  I bet you had tanks stuck worse than that!!  Of course a T6 is not exactly a tank retriever either!!

Great work on your truck. Your making great progress! It will be a good driver for you and the family!

I am working on a old truck now too. Your tire work is similar to what I was just into also. split rims!
