axial_al
I used one of these machines on fall disked corn stalks ahead of the planter planting soybeans. Sure does chop up residue and give a nice level seed bed. Has anyone used these machines for Fall residue management or are they a "Spring only" tillage tool? Thanks. SMOKER 1
Guys around here use them both spring and fall. I tried one and didn't care for it. I only wanted to go an inch deep a leave the residue on top. Only drawback it the wind blowing the stalks blowing around. We don't run the McFarlane until the day we plant. Everyone has a different opinion and should do what they think is best. My only fault with the CIH 330 is that it is a disk with straight blades for big money. Also the guys that have them have to sharpen the blades after a couple thousand acres in our black sand and that is a long and expensive project. My 2 cents. ChrisNY
Demoed one this week on 60 acres, wasn't impressed. Fluffed the stalks up and wanted to pile up in front of fertilizer coulters, brought rocks to surface that stuck in spiked closing wheels about every other pass. Ground is dry and left it with golfball size chunks, did nice where there was moisture. Very expensive and honestly our disk set shallow with crumbler behind does a better job, yea yea not vertical tillage, but neither is 330 in my opinion with angled gangs. Might work good in fall to chew up stalks but only about 1 in 10 years is it dry enough to do that in fall. Our disk will to everything the 330 will do and can use it for wider range of dutys. They are a fad which is passing, in my opinion, seeing alot of them being traded in on other tools or being parked. Bet you will be able to buy them cheap in not so distant future. Just my opinion
Jeff-C-IL
Tried a vertical tillage tool in the spring. Then it rained. Turned my ground into concrete. I might use one in the fall instead of a disk, but why?
Cornfarmer95
They're junk, not near heavy enough to do a good job. Had to put front tractor weights on the wings just to keep them in the ground! Big money for a small/cheap disk.
dumbfarmer
my neighbor had one and got rid of it and bought a 3950 disk said all it did was make his stalks blow away
Rawleigh99
We run them in the fall here. No tillage is done in the spring. The blowing residue was a problem this year because of abnormally high winds.
