sugarmaker
Rob, Thanks for the encouragement. If this continues to give me problems I may take it off the tractor and disassemble as you say. My guess is there is a loose wire again or still in there some where or tapping on the outside would not have done anything. FYI When the starter did spin over it turned faster than it did before I need to look at the wiring for the lights too. Cant remember if I put a fuse in the line to the lights or not?:) Other than those two issues the old TD6 worked well to move some hard frozen snow piles in the yard. sugarmaker
Folks, Yes a 20 amp auto type fuse was installed in the correct location, and when the starter shorted it blew this fuse. I will put up some pictures. Lights work now, but I didn't feel like trying to start it. I need to look at the adjustments on the starter switch and see if I have them set correct. There is a screw that hits the starter button and I backed that out when I was playing around. It may not be making contact at the right time. sugarmaker
Hey why didnt you guys tell me one of my mesh covers for the lights needs turned 45 degs??:) That is going to bug me till I get it fixed proper! The left one in this photo looks more correct?? But then again when I look back at the first pictures in this thread that right light has the mesh turned same as I have it now. Other light was crushed. Wonder if my Uncle Jack was helping me put that light together?:) Regards, Chris
sugarmaker
Folks, No! Nothing is happening in this neck of the woods! Looks more like winter than spring! Freezing temps, fresh 1 inch of snow on the ground! I have some work for the TD6 at my daughters house, if I can get it hauled there. She has some dirt to move to fill in some trenching work we did a few weeks ago. I haven't tried starting it lately so not sure the starter is going to function? If it warms a bit I may get out there and test it. Hope things are good in Red Land! Regards, Chris

sugarmaker
Folks, Warm weather finally got to our neck of the woods. (for at least a day!) Had to play with the TD6 yesterday. First I adjusted the engagement bolt that contacts the starter switch so that it contacts sooner. I was pleasantly surprised that it fired right up immediately on gas! Switched over to diesel easily after a minute or so. Charging rate looked good. Oil pressure good. Engine temp started to come up into the cold zone. Moved out and all systems seemed to be working good including steering , brakes and hydraulics!. I used the TD6 to back drag the hard driveway to fill in some pot holes. Not the ideal tool but worked good to loosen the hard stone. I had several little projects that I wanted to work on. - the starter contact bolt ------(done above) - move the steering levers far forward to allow more knee room on the left, by the clutch. -----Replaced the longer lever stops with shorter bolts and then adjusted the turn buckles out to get he 4 inch of pull. This worked good and gives me some more room too! - fix the (add on) starter handle to keep it from flopping around. ------This was the hardest. I took the grab handle off and went to NAPA to find a lock nut. Well I thought it was a 1/2-20 fine thread. It is not, turns out it is a pipe thread. So I retapped a custom made jam nut to a pipe thread (close to 1/2-20) and put that on first then the lever extension and then the Tee handle. Then tightened the lock nut. Does any one else have problems pulling that tee handle to start a TD6? Or is it just me? Anyway the lever extension (chrome part) Allows me to start it much easier! Looks a little odd but it works for me. - look at fixing the screen on the left light to make the grill cover match the right side. -----So I thought this was a easy fix. Just turn the screen. Wrong! The screen needed to be rotated 45 degrees not 90! So I himed and hawed about this until I decided that the only way to fix it right was to rotate the screen 45 degrees. Easier said than done. Almost ruined the screen, cutting out bits and pieces on the back side, to allow it to become loose and rotate. Most of the creative work is hidden when its in place. Results are pleasing. In hind site the TD6 light screens may all have been at 45 degrees? I think the first pictures show that. So maybe the light and screen I bought on line was for another machine? Considering having a local hauling company move the TD6 to my daughters to do some driveway work and move some dirt to fill some low spots. Still have not tackled the greasing of the rollers!:) ANd need to better secure the seat when operating the machine. Thanks for checking in on me! sugarmaker
Folks, I want to check out the thermostat on the TD6 in the next week or so. I think I have the correct one for the machine? The tractor has been running cool (but I havent been working it either) Coolant level has been staying up and no known leaks in the system at this time. Top radiator hose look pretty fragile Original or old) and I am sure will need to be replaced. I was just going to get a hose at NAPA for the top. Like a cut to length from a piece of the right size hose. Pretty sure I will need to make my own gaskets. That should not be a issue, have made many gaskets from gasket sheet stock. Clean up all the parts and surfaces, etc. So the goal is to: Get the hose and thermostat housing/s off the mach. See if there is a thermostat in place now? If it does exist, See if it is functioning. If not there then install the new one. I assume the thermostat sets in the block, so both the castings have to come off. I know KOo does these in his sleep, on his fleet. Suggestions welcome. Tanker916
The thermostat is in the large housing that bolts to the cylinder head. Pretty easy to get to actually.
sugarmaker
Tanker, Thanks! I will get in to this near the end of the week. Temps at back into the mid 30's. Just doing stuff in the garage for now. Regards, Chris
farmalldr
Chris, here is pic of my lights on T6. They are not original to this tractor. I bought then at an auction. They were red and bolted right on. Screens at 45 deg. Dennis
Grumpy Gaby
Sugarmaker She is looking a lot better than the first picture of her, Good work! The thermostat and gaskets are the same as an M. Just don't let them sell you a thermostat that doesn't have the skirt on it. Neighbor did that to his M a few weeks ago...... over heated.....I gave him a correct one. Have Fun!!!! north of 60
Chris, maybe your thermostat is stuck open or it may have been removed... these old girls seem to run a lot smoother when you can keep the temperature above 150 degrees... I have a 180 degree thermostat in the TD9, that I ordered from Steiners, and it works well .. Grant
sugarmaker
Dennis, Thanks! Your lights Are correct! Mine are not now, but not going to change them at this time!:) Thanks Gaby, Just keep poking at the TD6 a couple times a year. Would be a good day to work on that thermostat too, weather is 60F and nice. Grant, I will try to take some pictures when I get in to it. Thanks for checking in on me. farmalldr
Chris, I don't think it matters as long as they are the same. Vendor may have made a change during production. Dennis
louie figone
Chris, I forgot I had these under the work bench, they are off a TD6, all three have the screen 90 deg. Like Dennis said, vendor may have made a change. But then again look at the TD6 with the blade on it, screens are 45 deg. Whatever you are happy with is the way to put them. sugarmaker
Louie, Thanks for clearing this right up!:) OK I guess the screens can go either direction. SO I at least have mine going the same way (90 degrees) on the same tractor. Looked really wrong with one of each! I painted my housings black, I think the backs on my TD6's were black as near as I could tell. And there was someone on here that painted theirs balck and I liked that look. See a lot of red backs too! Your probably right that the manufacture changed the designs and colors along the way. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Are you interested in selling any of the light assemblies? I would like to put a back up light on also. Just another potential project. Off to buzz some flat wood, for making syrup next spring. sugarmaker
Folks, Speaking of lights I received a very nice light today from one of our forum members, Redwood! Thanks again Gene! This will make a nice little project to add a a back up light to the TD6. Its a red back with horizontal grill.:) Now to determine where I should mount it. sugarmaker
Folks, The TD6 sets as it has for most of the last 20 years or so. Don't have a real job for it yet this spring. I have been busy with orange tractors. Looks like a WD45 is going to be the project for this summer. Also trying to keep up with the lawn. Spent a hour or so picking up brown grass with the Cub Cadet and sweeper. Hope things are good out in red land! Regards, Chris
sugarmaker
Folks, Man time flies! Almost July and I haven't fired up the TD6 yet this summer. I did more work with it in the cold weather than now. Maybe writing this will prompt me to get off my butt and at least start it and move it to keep the steering clutches working? I have been busy with mowing lawn, putting in garden, camping and working on a 1955 Allis-Chalmers WD45 tractor. That is going to be my project for the year. It needs a lot of work and I found the block was cracked and needs a complete engine rebuild. Off color: Thanks for checking in on me. north of 60
Good to hear from you Chris ! So many projects, so little time... that AC will keep you busy for awhile... Just got back from a trip up the Alaska Highway, saw some potential projects on the way... a WD9 in particular caught my eye... and an early 1960’s Mack truck... My wife groans every time I spot one of those potential projects and just have to stop to check it out ..
