My RPRU trip has changed into a family vacation and I have some questions about South Dakota .

  1. Mount Rushmore , is it worth the trip and how long does it take ?
  2. Badlands Park , have a chance to stay there Saturday night . Any must see areas?
  3. Badlands Park , how long should one allow ?
  4. Anything else over there that would interest a 13 year old daughter ? LOL
  5. Is there a secure place I could leave my semi & tractors from Saturday afternoon thru Tuesday ?

Thanks for the help and looking forward to RPRU B)

I'll take a shot at 1 & 4 ,definitely worth seeing Rushmore and there are also lots of caves in the area and an indoor water park at a motel in Rapid City that our kids got a bang out of a few years back, sorry but I can't remember the name of it. Oh yeah I almost forgot, they have evening shows at the Rushmore amphitheater that are awesome to see.

Badlands are about 5 hours from Huron and the Black Hills are another hour west. The Badlands and Wall Drug can be done in an afternoon. Continue on the Rapid city for the night. The Black Hills can take multiple days if you try to take in everything. Mt. Rushmore is a must. Wind cave is good and I like the Cosmos too. Custer state park along with Sylvan lake and the needles can take a solid day too. Good luck and have fun. Don't see any reason why the truck and trailer can't sit at the rpru site.

The 1880 train in Hill City is worth the $$$.

Just there two weeks ago.

The Alpine Inn in Hill City cooks an awesome steak..............That's what they do, and they are GOOD at it.

Evans Plunge in Hot Springs is a naturally heated indoor pool..

All kinds of stuff to do....be sure to leave a few bux ($) at the casinos in Deadwood. ;)

There will be security at the RPRU site all week.

Thanks for the help . Wife is excited to see Rushmore more than my daughter  .

Just to be clear I am wanting to leave semi loaded w/tractors AFTER the show on Saturday and will be back Tuesday July 1 .

I would rather leave it someplace like the fairgrounds than a truckstop for 3 days unattended .

I will ask about that at the meeting tomorrow afternoon, and get back to you.

My yard is about 60 miles out of your way, but it's an option.

By all means go to the night lighting at Mt Rushmore if possible.----you won't regret it!!!

Security will end at 6 PM Saturday nite....after that it looks like a guy is on his own.

I would ask at sign-in about where to leave things afterward.

There has to be a solution---just gotta find the person who knows what it is.

If your close as Mt.Rushmore, go on down the road and the Crazyhorse monument too.

Yes to Mt. Rushmore, catch the evening show if you can work it out.

Find Roughlock Falls which is near Spearfish. Neat place to let the kids get their feet wet and cool off mid afternoon

.

Bear Butte which is out on the plains in the Sturgis area is educational and not a tourist trap.

Make the Nebo Road drive.

If your close as Mt.Rushmore, go on down the road and the Crazyhorse monument too.

Ditto. I've seen this project several times over the years starting when I was in my early teens and almost the entire statue was outlined in paint on the mountain. Well worth the cost.

There is no security once the show ends Saturday. But I would not be too worried about leaving it here. The Fair staff will be around and I doubt anyone would bother it any more than they might in your yard at home. The Black Hill is beautiful. After a trip through there I went through Yellowstone and on down to Boulder CO for a week. The Black Hills were the highlight of the entire trip for me. Plan a whole day to drive through the park. Drag Maci along kicking. She won't forget it. I have never seen the faces up close although I've been through there twice. A view from the distance is spectacular. It's like you don't expect men to be looking out at you from stone mountains and there they are, bigger than life, miles and miles away!

Badlands....The most awesome pass I made through the Badlands was in 1976, we entered at sunset and rode motorcycles through under a brightly moonlit night. we stopped at every pulloff area and the place was spectacular yet a little spooky under those conditions.

We camped there that night and then took a helicopter ride the next morning before heading back towards Indiana. The helicopter ride also gave a new perspective of the Badlands even though I had flown over them in a small airplane severaly ears prior. Something about just sitting still in the air while the pilot pans the view while explaining the significance of the formations. A little pricey but well worth it.

If you do Rushmore be sure the check out the rock/mineral shops in Custer and Hill City. I'm sure your daughter would like them. Then of course in the same area there's Hot Springs, Wind Cave NP, and Jewel Cave NM.

I agree with Maynard, If you get to Sturgis, Bear Butte and Ft. Meade are a good stop. Ft. Meade is the place that General Custer left before the Last Stand. Lot of history. You can climb Bear Butte, about a four hour hike. I have lived here all my life and I haven't done it yet.
