Gauge or Sending Unit??

My fuel gauge on the 584 went wacky yesterday. It had been going back and forth some but now it reads close to E when it's really full and the needle still goes back and forth really fast. I'm guessing it's the sending unit but I thought I'd ask the experts before I ordered one and whished I'd got the other instead. Any advise/suggestions?
Thanks much!!

The little arm on the sender unit that rubs on the coil is not making good contact. It may be possible to remove the sender and clean thins up but usually there is too much wear on the contacts to make it work again for any length of time.
