Ttoy have to agree on milk check, I think it was a whole 16.30 per cwt. Figures there was over 100nfarms in Minn. that quit in 23, they said 43 alone in november, here in central wis no shortage of herds at the 2 local sale barns, coming from all over the area. Local corn price is about 3.70 per bushel so if you had extra corn thats not going to help much either,

Everything else has doubled in price except ag products sold. Milk should be 30+. Corn should be bumping double digit highs. Beans should be over 20.

But then everyone trips over each other to rent everything out from under friends and neighbors like they do now. Price all the profits right back out....

Vicious circle...

Temptation is great.  We been thinking selling 210Mag since just not what we hoped.  Too big and to small all together.  Should of gotten another sq Mag or Puma 200-220 and i know be happier.  With selling the 210.....this is a steal.  Wonder what issue is if it was insurance claim?  Seems excessive.  I emailed guy to see.  Stoopidd🤷🏽‍♂️

@SDman would you say is salvageable if let's say it had engine oil in hydros?

On too reality.  Been looking hard at just selling out.  Been super bad winter   coop is dinging us 1.50cwt extra for former bad management decisions to keep company solvent.  30k a month just for us.  40/hd is good figure we all use.  Friend milks 3300 and its well N of 120k /month.  Coast is nust expensive and county is thinking we need a 20/hr min wage like seattle.😡  I DONT have that.  Also looked a different dairy inland.   If guy would deal(you know make a price and commit to selling) it would be cheaper to operate and little more cows and land.  End of road guy..... i think alot of you will get that.  Like he is living in another world.  I dont want to quit but...might be last time for the high $ with state working at taking our water rights away.   And there is 2000 ac i bet in 10 miles of 75yo+ guys with no heirs thinking of selling.  So i maybe should be 1st

A few pics.

Went through a KP I assume?  My brother tried Enogen silage and I don’t recall any complaints about cobs.  I don’t think he plants it any more though, so there must not have been any advantage.

Yes.. the cob is like a hollow star.  What we jet out of pipe looks like grape nuts.  After 3rd time plugging the 6" pipe to the seperator we rebuilt the pump and ran 2 days worth straight to the tank to hope full flush it out.  So far so good last 5 weeks.  So...all the corn?  Weak pump? Both....?  2nd jetting in mid jan nearly got the nozzle stuck in pipe it was so solid.

Fwiw we emptied that bunker mid week.  Went to new pile of normal corn....up 2# milk🤔

Rough decisions to be made. Dairy is a way of life it seems. I know several folks who dairied for generations got out. Was the hardest thing ever,  switched to fence  but 2 years later would not go back.

With what I see happening , I see guys switching  to robots, the cost is crazy high, there is no shortage of guys quitting around here in the midwest, it seems you go all in , I will bet some of the investment per cow is close to 20 K per cow, then you should have some land and some equipment,

We planted all Enogen for three years at the end of our milking days . Was good for us. Was higher availability than conventional, lower than BMR but no major drawbacks like BMR can get. Never saw any issues with passing through the cows like you experienced.

It would be the hardest thing I’ve ever done if I had to sell out and leave where I’m at. I’m not even sure I could bring myself to do it. But, from the outside looking in, if I had a way to get out of the insane asylum that is some of these states, I would do it while you still can. If I was going to move, it sure wouldn’t be to a state run by a business/farm hating kook.

This has to be a hard decision.  My father, back in the late 1960s decided it was time to abandon dairy farming.  I know it weighed on both him and my mother throughout the remainder of their lives.  He went on to have success in other endeavors, but always maintained fondness and nostalgia for our small operation.

Regardless of your decision, I bet you will also thrive.

Stuff....

Took day off for spring Break.  TopGolf, higjly recommend, like bowling but with golf.  Kids love it.

The Museum of Flight next to Boeing Field Seattle.  Wellllllllll worth the $20bucks to get in.  4 hr minimum needed.  The wood building is the original Boeing factory from the 1920s.  Belt shaft and all.  Someone in the 70s had the presense to think they should save it before building a new plant.  Moved it and it sat for many years before the Museum got funding and built.  Its beautiful restored sitting next to the modern parts.  The wood work on the wings displayed would make you tear up.

Then end of spring break Youth Fair.  14yo got 1st in fit and show with this little stinker of calf.  But the judge said she was too small but she knew exactly what she was doing when they traded calves.  The youngest 10yo got 1st with type and her dec calf she picked herself.

I always thought the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport was top notch but that almost looks even better (although the Smithsonian does have an actual Space Shuttle).  Shame it's on the wrong side of the continent for me.

Oldest girl ran for Dairy Ambassador.  She got 2nd.  Which is fine.  They all 3 will be in schools and etc etc making appearances showcasing dairy in the area.  Annnnnnd it looks great on scholarship apps!  Judge told me it was way closer between the 3 girls than she imagined it would be.  The #1 spot is a girl from 1 mile up the road.....we're the only 2 left in big swath of area now.  We were actually really happy, several kids from church youth group and a handfull of girls from school came.  Been some "holy balls girls are mean little ********" stuff at school with some former long time friends.  So seeing good kid supporting her made her smile nearly break.

Election season....getting media press releases out

Dad admiring the mess.  Old Artex box chain tensioners were siezed up for loooong time.  Finally broke down and got out the torch and time.  They are 2" receiver tubes actually and had rusted good.  Sledge and cherry red finally got em moving.  Got it all cleaned up, painted good and got chains snug.

Uncle olllllllllld grass field he finally let go.  80% dandyloins.
