SOB....futures have went even lower last few days.  So sickening.  Beyond frustrating at this point.  At least we've had nice cool breezy sunny weather.  Mountains need snow bad though.  No resorts even open yet....generally it about the week before Thanksgiving.

Still toying with another biz.  Did a lot of phone calling and I may have already sold more than he did last year!  Keep telling guys to hold their horses....or donate to the cause ;).  Someone said "oh then you may not get paid".  Which I replied "so like now but I CAN have the law force someone to pay.  Now I'm just hosed "  sounds tough..... :(

a lot of things to consider for sure.  Risk vs reward I suppose.  Now my work is lacking in the reward dept.

Hang in there Troy. I think everyone here is hoping for better days for all dairy farms. It's been tough for sure. It sure does not make sense to me that all these mega dairies are still expanding. Crazy... Getting to raise the kids on the farm is a "reward" that is hard to quantify...

I was talking to our vet ,he does some of the sale barn work around here, told him of the sale I watched last Thursday, missed the first hour so probably didn't see the higher priced cows sell, but what I did see is a lot of 400 to seven hundred dollar cows sell. painful to watch, vet then commented some of these herds that are bank owned or forced sales. sometimes they are required to run every cow thru the ring, he said most of the time you can cut out the bad ones ahead of time though.and put them in the kill pen, I was reading the local paper today. now grassland wants to build a 5k plus cow place near there plant, seems just last year they were cutting producers. lots of opposition but they are very hard to stop around here.

Starter on 7140 went.  CIH wants 650....wth.  Had dad run to old school automotive electronics place and they will rebuild it. He said less than 350 probably.  It was the OEM starter.  Had a CASE sticker on it.  Not even cih.  So 17800 hrs, 31 years old, it was time

I see the price of cheese continue down, wonder when farmers will figure out that less would be more, as long as they are not the one going out of business its still okay, feed guy said in Wisconsin we are going to be down to 6000 farms when this is done, at about 8k now so another year or two and we will be there now the talk is starting on who will get funding for spring planting. just think of the amount of equity that has been lost the last couple of years, got to be at least half on cattle and a little on land,

I believe there is criminal activity going by manipulating the markets. Period

I'm told by a guy who has a dairy south of Route 80 that just buy another one north of Route 80 said there's a $2 pay difference ......they knocked $2 off if you're north of 80...

Some days.......sure be nice to just pack up and move to some island and subsidence live.

...like  our little country, NZ,...under this year old Socialist Govt.......the non- productive are getting the odd break......whilst the Farming / Business  community  are  getting hammered....typical   Socialist BS.......they may well find it is going to get possibly cold and hungry   for the people.......when all those nasty farmers are  brought into line......meaning taxed into submission....

Market manipulation by whom?

We always said for years the local creamy was owned by the mob....

One story goes that this one guy owned convenience stores up and down the coast. Every day the store manager was supposed to take a dollar out of the take for the day and mail it to him. Multiply that by several dozen stores, seven days a week, and that adds up to some serious tax free pocket change???

I always think a day off with nothing pressing to do would be fun for a change. Only seems to happen with the pukes and squirts so i prefer to stay busy. When i do get floored for a day or two i like to watch movie series (Star Wars, etc) or mini series(North and South, Blue and Gray, all 7 seasons of the Dukes of Hazzard, etc) from start to finish. Never get to otherwise and never know whats going on either. If i doze off just back up to where i remember. Thankfully it is usually several years between illnesses.

I was sick Tuesday morning as soon as my alarm went off at 2am.  Did my usual route all day....nothing worse than being on the road and being sick.  Plenty of stops alongside the road and convenient store bathrooms.

I don't see how. It was banned on the east coast two or three years ago and the thing we saw was no drop in production.

when I say banned what I should have said really was the co-op's demanded you don't use it or you won't ship to them

one milkman just laughed when we talked about, gave me the impression that he still does suspect it is being used, how could they ever detect ti anyway? they would have to actually see the product on the farm.?

I believe that if it's shipped to your address they're going to find out. it's really a non-issue seeing as everyone I know that went off of it didn't lose milk pounds per cow .

When my wife asked, I told her the explanation I got from Troy,  she was confused why it seemed different than the story she got from the media

Exactly.....and are mainly idiots who couldn't get a career in a real profession.  I mean really.....with the connected world we live in do we need cnn or abc news even anymore?  Thanks Eric/AK, hope she she spreads the truth.  All it did was make cows think they were producing more so they ate more....more calories=more milk.  Also i have someone on my DO call list!

Our coop forced (via Costco) us to stop BST iirc 10 years ago now.  When we started it it was good.  Feed was low priced and etc.  In my experience it was Monsantos push to do other things better so posilac would shine.  B/c all of us know you can make a crappy farmer with a crappy place produce stellar milk per cow.  Their work on cow comfort, holding pen times, cooling, overall stress reducing, ventilation, better milking procedures and etc made us all better.  So lets say the bst made us 5#, the other stuff made us free 5# plus.  So by the time we lost the tool 7-8 years of doing and breeding better made us 8-10# so....when the bst left we were better and our cows were better.  I really miss it on late lactation cows.  Ones who had some issue so just didn't get bred on time.  Our cull rate actually bumped up a cpl pts when we had to stop.  No more save a good older cow for few more months.  Now they just go to McDs.  I always think how many less hfrs i could raise if i didnt have to cull them older cows who are just on the edge of my keep list.  Save more than the bst cost.

I never used BST. another product that the dairy industry used to shoot itself in the foot. I always figured that if we wanted to get serious about making milk, there were other things I could do without giving money to Monsanto. our cows still gave us 23-24000# anyway.

friends that had to stop using it, said the same as Troy- they adapted and didn't lose production when it was banned.
