New Englander
Open center system. The hitch and 3 point have no hydraulics; all MCV functions OK. The pump looks like new. The only thing we found amiss was the o-ring on the pump inlet tube on the filter side was missing, perhaps knocked out when a pump was changed although we couldn't find it. The working theory is the unloading wagon it was running drew the oil level below the inlet and, although still in the normal range on the stick, it was sucking air. Reasonable theory? Other areas we should look before we reassemble it? Thanks!
Red Tech
Stuck pressure relief valve. Note: on the 86 series, this is located on the hydraulic block under the rear fuel tank support and is accessible from the rear of the tractor.
Eric Farley
most likely its the valve. Did you check the key on the pump shaft? could have sheared but binding enough to fool you when turned by hand
Brian stortenbecker
Even though the mcv seems to work i would check the hyd. filter if you have not done so. Some 1566 and 86 seemed to have wheel bearing problems. the filter will at least let you know if such a problem exists.

Wheel bearing problems were usually the result of the brakes wearing out and grinding up, polluting the planetaries and everything else, including the filter, with metal filings. New Englander
Filter is new, very few filings in case. Will double check key. Removed valve and it "looked" normal. Will swap from another tractor if still nothing. Confirm valve is the one that removes straight back from under the seat near the centerline? Red Tech
That is indeed the location of the valve.
