axial_al
Anyone have any experience converting a wide row (36-40") caseih head into a 30" head? I have a 1054 in really good shape and am thinking of buying another row unit and a set of caseih poly instead of trading it in. There is not much demand anymore for a five row wide head. The five row wide head actually has a wider toolbar than a 1063 so that is not going to be a problem; but I am wondering what else I could run into attaching the divider brackets or whatever. Thanks in advance for any advice.
hemlockfarms5288
My uncle did a four row wide to a narrow. I know the biggest part was cutting the auger down to size. He also cut and re welded the main beam up top and lower beam underneath where the row units bolt. As far as going to poly you can save a lot of money going to GVL II series instead of case IH. Just did a total rebuild on my 963 and and I was very happy with their snouts Alex
wally_wolff
Probably won't have to cut the auger on this conversion
MIsparky
http://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=212116&posts=26&highlight=20%22%20ih%20head&highlightmode=1#M1593332 This link is for converting an 800 seires to 20" rows, not quite what your looking for but very detailed information. Perhaps some of that will apply to your project. I was planing on doing an 883 to 12-20" conversion this winter, but I just found a Clarke conversion complete..... one less winter project. smfarms
Just curious, why 5 rows? Odd number. Is your planter on odd rows? 5 or 10 ? Just never heard of odd number of rows. Around here everything is even # 4-6-8 and so on. Any advantage?

gary1466
I converted a 954 into a 6-30Added another rowunit and used poly the biggest problem was needing a longer driveshaft for one side because the coupler is in the center on a 6 row you then cut the opposite shaft shorter Holes have to be drilled for Rowunit for auger trough bolts the end Dividers are about flush with the drive chain shields. Auger and frame were not modified I did this for a customer so I would have to look at it again to see what brand the poly was it was bought from THE Company in Mount Pleasant Iowa The rear brackets had to be narrowed up and the covers over the hex shaft cut down any more questions just ask
