IH Tractors on Montana Farm

Old Binder Guy

Recommended Posts

I've noticed I've slowed down a bunch since my 80th birthday, and even before. My get up and go has kind of gotten up and gone sometimes. I really don't have much of anything to post. I did sure like this Deering binder being pulled by a team of at least three horses. Dad said they preferred Deering Binders over McCormick, but had both.

I don't know how many times I've posted this photo of new 1939 IH Farmall M's and H in the 4th of July parade in 1940 at Lewistown, Montana. Fred M. Bourke, the dealer is driving the front Farmall M. The next is an M. The rear tractor is a Farmall H. I've so often wondered that this is probably our IH Farmall H, "Annie"? The Fergus County Courthouse is in the background.

Annie is #FBH 681 or the 181st Farmall H built. (you already know that IH started their serial numbers at "501"!) Since Annie is that early, it just about had to be the one in the photo. I still remember when the rear wheels were turned around a half turn, like the three in the photo. They were turned for sidehill stability when mowing hay, which she did so very much of. I had just given her a bath in this older photo.  Gary😉

I noticed the 3 IH's still have their hubs in the shipping position

[belly out]

had to do that to the M [cherry] to move it from Mn. to the Keweenaw

other wise it would not fit on the equipment trailer [6'-6'' wide]

I'm trying to  help a widow friend sell her S-Model IHC motor home. She lost her husband who was a sleep walker and liked sleeping in the upstairs bedroom. I think his skull is above the door he fell out of. All offers considered but must be green cash under the table. The table is downstairs.

We have talked about pencil drawings and such here in the past so I thought I would share this painting a local artist did of our barn/silo with some fruit trees next to it. Very nice detail in my opinion. This was painted yesterday.

That is such a soft and mellow photo of buildings of the past. Thanks for posting it here, Todd. Gary

I happened to run onto an IHC "Blue Ribbon Service" photo on Facebook. Some Mogul IHC tractors in a "Big Sky" dealership shop.

This IHC Mogul might be a Type A in this North Dakota postcard.

l really like pics of irrigation engines of all kinds. ln the mid 60's, the man my Dad worked for drilled several new wells. One was in a low water draw and had a new IH engine on it. All l can remember about it was it was a V-8 and painted industrial yellow. Seems like it was a 502 c.i....? Al the other wells on our farm had Chrysler V-8's on them. The one in this pic had been changed out to Chevy l think.

Minneapolis-Moline engines were pretty popular in our area too. l like this pic because it shows the cooling jackets and pipes going from irrigation line to the water reservoir tank on the engine.

They used a Eversman dtcher pulled behind a tractor to dig the ditches like these. And used aluminum tubes to siphon from the ditch to the row.

Then later they started using gated aluminum pipe.

As a former dryland farmer, I was never subjected to much in the way of irrigation. It had to be a lot of work in the old days. Nowadays, I see the center pivot irrigation here in the Helena area and assume it is a lot easier than some of the old manners of irrigation. At Whitefish School District, we had aluminum sectional piping irrigation for track and football fields. I never did any of that. My guys did.

Mike has "irrigation" at his Silver Creek cropland we thresh. He never had to irrigate this year though. We had perfect rain all summer long. This is him working at his irrigation well.

This is his one irrigation sprinkler at work. Gary 😁

I was running the bigger version of that at work this week on some alfalfa. No rain to speak of here since the end of August.  Dry for us.

Planted canola today...Probably be irrigating it Monday.

Put in my retirement notice and worked my last effective day yesterday, Gary and I had similar work backgrounds, I sign off now to 4 hospitals, 380 beds and a food production facility that was doing 1,000 meals a day and said goodbye to some great staff BUT my steaming days may not be over quite yet, in talks about finishing up my career in a power plant my Dad opened in 1968, would be a fitting end and full circle, I remember going to visit occasionally as a small kid, 55 years later it has passed its first flush of youth that I recall.

Hardtail, I'm so glad for you that you got to retire. Retirement seems to have gone so much faster than working ever did, but it's still a great time to get to do things you want to do. It's a good feeling to be missed by institutions manned by people you enjoyed serving all of those years. I always loved showing up at a problem where people were horrified and be able to fix the situation with an inner satisfaction they can't understand. I'd imagine that power plant is NOT full time? Or is it? God bless you in your retirement pursuits! And thank you for putting me on this forum! Gary😁

Casual relief and hands on repairs, right up my alley, should know more in the weeks ahead, I used very little vacation since Covid hit so I am burning vacation now for the next 2 months, last official day is Dec 1st on previous job, then I am officially retired.

hardtail, since you were the last poster, I'll put Harold the Army dozer, the TD-24 that was retrieved from a lake. I'm sure you know all about it, but I ran into this photo on Facebook and thought of you. I believe this was taken at Rollag this year, I don't remember. Beside Harold is my late friend Carl Mehmke's USMC TD-18 I've ran when it was near Great Falls.

When Marion built this big shovel for coal mining, somebody placed a 1955 Chevy and a 1954 Ford in the bucket.

It doesn't seem possible, but this photo represents 75 years of Vermeer round balers. What a thing they progressed with. They didn't start the round bales. Allis Chalmers did that a few years before. But they were a much smaller round bale. My late friend Oscar O. Cooke at Billings had the first Allis Chalmers round baler, since he'd been an AC Block Man.

Here is a ditcher at work in North Dakota that has an IH diesel engine, likely like the TD-14?

An egg yoke separator from a North Dakota IH dealer, a giveaway to customers. I remember Mom had a yellow one from the Lewistown Creamery when I was a young boy.

I'm sure this artistry isn't stretching things too badly. Poor hunter... The next time he does that, he'll keep that Winchester '94 carbine closer to him.

The pic of the deer hunter reminds me of a story my Dad told about Mom deer hunting. When we lived in Minnesota, shotgun slugs were all that was allowed for taking deer. Dad placed Mom next to a tree on a ridge to sit and wait while Dad circled around the grove and maybe push a deer towards her.  Had to be close to a deer for slugs to be effective. Mom liked to shell peanuts while waiting. I guess Mom fell asleep and while asleep, a doe came up and sniffed around at the peanuts. Dad woke Mom up and asked her how the tracks got there around her!  She never saw or heard a thing. 🤣🤣🤣

I might have something that you need for Tony the A. I picked up a couple tires and rims that fit an A or B farmall the other day south of Missoula. I could use a rim for my B project tractor as one has a small rust hole.  I asked the guy if he had anything else farmall related and he dug up a swinging drawbar and front cross bar for an A. His didn’t have any wear at all. I don’t know if it was ever used. I’ll paint it and put it on my A but you can have the old one if you want it. I thought you just have the hoop on Tony if my memory is correct. The drawbar isn’t wore out but has more wear then the one I just picked up.

Matt nice and peaceful in the woods...

Gary, yes I did follow the TD24 recovery, great progress given the timeliness, mud and more importantly lack of oxygen can be a great preserver, I think I told the story of a traction steam engine that broke through the ice and laid in the bottom of a lake for decades, I think it is the same one that sits outside our northern boilers branch as a static display but the details might be sketchy 🤔 Hope to see the bucket of Big Muskie one day on one of my road trips.
