First car you drove to school

The Buick thread got me thinking of my first cars. My son (20) starts at a university today, he's gone to trade school for 2 years but had to transfer to a university this year. He spun a bearing in his 455 so the Buick is out. He's got a few older cars but the only 2 running are a 90s Roadmaster wagon and a 80s square body tow truck. I told him you can't drive a station wagon on the first day of school, maybe the 3rd day but not the first 😂. And we're not sure how big the parking spot is for the extended frame dually wrecker. So he's driving my 71 camaro if it's not raining. Tunnel ram 355 4spd cragars and true Hooker side mount headers. A true late 70's hot rod.                                             First car I drove was a Plymouth horizon I bought to fix and resell. Made a few dollars on it but not much. Then a 79 Regal with the 231 v6 I bought from my sister. I had a 69 camaro and a 69 chevelle also but never had the money to get them running and sold the bodies before I graduated in 89. There was also a rough family chevy Luv in there. My parents never bought us cars but we could use theirs if they were free.

First vehicle I drove to school was dad's 76 D100 slant six. It wasn't mine but I got to drive it if dad wasn't using it. He had a nicer pickup he drove most of the time, 78 D150 club cab Dodge 318 three on the tree.

My first car I drove was a 73 Dodge Challenger I bought and fixed up. Ralley with a 340 auto. Substantial project. It was repoed and the owner had busted the windows, slashed the tires and seats, etc. Drove it my senior year.

Still have it in the pasture but it needs restored again.

My 1st was a 1988 F-250 black, 351, 4x4, 5spd.  It had 5 spoke American racing wheels and a road warrior rear bumper, which was like a DMI.  I cut the catalytic converter out and ran true duals with glass packs, tips angled out 45.  It was stupid loud but I never got in trouble.  Mostly I think that was because its a manual.  I could keep it quiet shifting at low rpms and pushing in the clutch around town. I bought it at 15 in 2000 and traded it in 2004 for a 1992 5.0 Mustang.  I should've never gotten rid of it as I had the money for the car.

72 f250 two wheel drive burned a quart of oil every 500 miles. Dropping my kid off at high school now and parking lot full of Teslas, Mercedes, bmw, caddies…one kid was driving 94 250 with a stick probably the one lone farm kid…

Only car I ever drove to school was a 1950 ford.  Think I drove 2 or 3 times.  We were poor and did not have an extra vehicle. I rode the bus along with 95% of every other student.  My senior year I drove every day starting on October 28.  Simply because I was hired to drive a school bus.  Got $10 a day.   It was a 1969 chev with a 350 and 4 speed. Also drove the junior/senior  basketball teams and cheerleaders to all away games that year and several more.

  '66 Ford Galaxie 4 door that belonged to my maternal grandmother.  Being a 16 year old kid I did not have the appreciation that I should have had for it.  Not like money was abundant for my parents.  Anyways, many many years after the car was gone that I recognized the cool factor in it.  It looked like the car Joe Friday and Bill Gannon drove in Dragnet of the late 1960's.  Still wish I had it so I could drive up to someone's house dressed like the guys from Dragnet.

second car was a ford Galaxy 500 2 door hardtop, it had the Canadian 428 in with a 3 speed automatic on the floor, all red interior, never understood the shifting, it wasnt all in line had to go up a gear to get back to drive, at that time local feed store owner had it for sale for 700 dollars, had to put the fm converter in for tunes, was going to save it forever but you know how that goes, another kid saw it , said I will pay you the rest later on, just a few hundred, well he never did, wrecked it,

Turd brown 1979 Chevette with a luggage rack that my brother wrecked the front end on.  4 squirrels under the hood with a four speed.  It was a 4 door. 😔. The bright side was the AM radio had an FM converter.

Chevette and Corvette sound alot alike.

Drove my parents' 1964 Impala 4 door. But rode the bus 95% of the time. Needed a darn good reason to drive. 

They had a 1972 Impala by that time so the 64 was a spare.

50 Studebaker, in 59, bad tires, and burning oil by the trip and smoking, and the brake  wheel kits (add fluid daily)  were always leaking and I never got a ticket for driving.

First thing I drove to school was a 1981 Bonneville Brougham diesel.

Got my dad’s 78 Chevy half ton 4x4. 350 4 speed. Got about 17mpg. Had 308 gears in it. He had an 88 Chevy half ton then. Second vehicle was an 81 TA T-top with 301 turbo. It got a 400 installed not long after I bought it.

Dad had a 76 caprice classic he bought new. Then he bought a 81 bonneville so my sisters could take the caprice to college. He bought a 72 ford Torino in 82  then for other sister to drive. I took drivers license test in 81 bonneville. The caprice came back home for the next 2 sisters to drive to high school while the Torino went to college. He bought a 79 el Camino from his friend but that stayed in garage but the fifth sister drove it once or twice and dented it so she wasn’t allowed to drive it. Then I got my 81 diesel Buick regal in November of 87 so that was my car. There were 4 of us in high school when I was a freshman. One in every grade. I started the caprice every morning , set it out full of gas for the 2 older sisters then I rode the bus to school.  I started out really driving the ford Torino when a freshman,and sophomore.the year older sister who is completely crazy wrecked the Torino. She left school for doctor appt and got rear ended. So Torino was gone then. Drove the Pontiac sparingly as it was mom’s car. A couple times it was 74 gmc 3/4 ton then elcamino sparingly junior year then Buick regal senior year in 88.

Gray 95 F250 4x4, 351, auto regular cab, 8' bed.  Dad got something newer and I got his truck.

I walked 99% of the time. We lived a block or block and a half from school, depending which door I went in. If I had something going on where I'd need a car it was usually the 72 Impala that was our spare car after mom and dad bought a new 84 Olds Cutlass Ciera. Sometimes I got to drive the 68 Chevy C10 with a 300 hp 350 from a 69 Impala. Later dad got a 1980 C10 and then a 1985 C10 but I didn't drive either of them very often. I didn't buy own pickup until two or 3 weeks after I graduated. I drove that 56 Chevy 3100 pickup to college about 200 miles away.

My first car which I bought in time for my senior year in high school was a ‘72 Chevy Nova 2 door coupe, 350 V-8, automatic, bucket seats. Nice car. I bought it used from a young man who had just bought it new, but had signed up to join the NAVY and wasn’t going to need the car for a few years, so he put it up for sale. I bought it for $1,900.00, which sounds cheap now, but as a 16 year old kid to me back then was a lot of money.

At that time, my dream car(s) that I would have wanted were either, A Buick GS Gran Sport, or a Pontiac Judge, or a Oldsmobile 442. Lol! The price on those new at that time were all over $4,000.00, which to me at the time seemed like $10,000,000.00, and so, unattainable at the time.

And so, I never did get my Gran Sport, Judge, or 442.

My brother has my ex ‘72 Nova to this day. He bought it off me years ago. He never drives it, it’s just sitting in his garage.

Started out with a 1984 Chevy S-10, 4 on the floor. 2.6 liter V-6

About 4 months into driving to school my aunt and uncle bought a New Pontiac Bonneville which meant that the 1994 Buick Park Avenue was for sale.  The Grey ghost is what i called it. It was a boat but it was a decked out boat and actually a dream to drive. Hit a deer with it just before I went to college and ended up totaling it out

84 ford crown Vic wagon. 302 auto. Turned some heads when the back tires would kick lose! I had bought my first truck earlier that summer but the agreement was my parents paid for half the truck but they could use it when needed. That first half of my junior year was my sisters senior year of college. She didn’t own a car but was a student teacher, so she got mom’s new car and mom took my truck.  I don’t remember why I occasionally got the wagon, I think dad had a pickup but he usually drove the wagon to work. After Christmas I had my truck, 88 f150 with a 302 2wd. Had to be automatic so mom could drive, and dads stipulation that first truck was 2wd so we learned how to actually drive in the snow. Thanks dad, it was the best thing for a young kid in this area.

Same engine i have in my 71 Chevelle. Stuck when I pulled it out. 

Actually it was a Kingswood wagon. Think it was this color.

I got my license like 2 days afte sophomore year.  My 1970 Nova didn't get to school till fall.  We had a 83 Old diesel wagon.  I wish we kept it but it was always something for dad.  Iirc a new engine and trans work.  It would overheat putttting up the pass to see family inland.  But man i KNOW me and the boys should of had fun if i kept driving it.  At 17 i did afternoon tech school with my friend.  He had a HOT 289 75 Comet, beautiful car.  And my 307 Nova I had rebuilt but dad said 307 was enough for 1st car......the tires it wore out proved that.  Anyways wed drive to tech school each afternoon half hr away.  Hed grab his mom 1990 Olds 98 sedan sometimes.  We then realized a 20mpg 4dr leather quiet fwd car wasnt so bad really.

53 Mercury paid $60 for it. Flathead V8. Had to park it on the street next to school so I could roll it down the small incline to start it. Couldn't afford a battery. Heater worked just enough to keep you from freezing. Defroster not much better. Wish I still had it.

The first vehicle I owned was a 1961 Ford pickup. It was an old soil conservation pickup. 6 cylinder 3 on the tree, short box step side. Burned more oil than gas. Bought it when I was 11 years old! 
Next was a ‘72 GMC 1/2 ton. Stuffed a 400 Pontiac in it and wrecked it before I ever got to drive it on the highway. That was when I just turned 16. Then I had a 76 Ford 3/4 ton. Brother rolled it. Drove it some after that, but it wasn’t the same. Must have still been 16. 
Then I got my 65 F100 with straight pipes. 
I got my school permit when I was 14. It allowed me to legally drive to school but I seriously doubt that I drove to school 10 times, and 1 of them I got caught in the R220 with a load of corn on. It was a tad bit over weight. 
I rode the stinking school bus from kindergarten through my senior year. An hour each way. Even though I owned my own vehicles. Never did understand why my younger siblings were able to drive to school but I was not. I asked my parents right before dad passed and they couldn’t answer me.
