New Englander Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Many years ago and being a junior FO I was on call for organ flights. The donor was often a young motorcyclist riding with no helmet. The docs who were going to do the transplant were the docs harvesting the organ and were like us going to the salvage yard. Like we want the wires and hoses and to look at how it's installed they were doing the same. I've been in two MC incidents. A helmet saved me for one of those, the other was simply a lot of road rash. At the time my brain was my second favorite organ but I still had the sense to wear a helmet. Quote

Cattech Posted April 7 Posted April 7 An expired SNELL helmet is probably going to be better than a lot of the cheap Chinese brain buckets out there... but either one is still better than no protection. Not that I'm any role model for wearing PPE. Honestly, if I still had a bike, and seeing how many local people have died on them recently. I would be trading the motorcycle for a used Corvette convertible. 2 Quote

I had the Jeep and the Saab if I needed wind in my..head.. and they’re more convenient and safer by a long shot. To each their own, but a quality helmet can be had for under $200, I just don’t see messing around with an expired/cheap one. Quote

Seems like more guys got stopped more for tilted up or tinted plate covers, but they're also asking for it going 4x over the speed limit doing wheelies. I've worked in the tree industry most of my life and depending on the company we'd switch out our helmets after they expired......7 years I believe. Like anything the material breaks down and weekends. I only ride an atv around the farm. 5 to 10 mph so no helmet......not saying anything couldn't happen then but........ I do make my son ride with a helmet. I set up a track for him and being younger I know he'd get in trouble. Riding snow mobile even around the farm I wear a helmet. I tend to be dumb on the snowmobile on banks so I try to protect myself. Almost 5 years ago a pick up truck drove through my coned off work area while I was un chaining the skidloader. I was ran over and dragged 10 feet. When my boss reached out to the business insurance company 1st thing the insurance asked was if I had a hard hat and safety glasses on..........my ball cap was flug a good 50 feet from where I was standing.......I don't think a hard hat would've helped my situation, my tinted safety/sun glasses were never found...........but I did have steal toe boots on......they didn't ask about them. I honestly don't know how I didn't hit my head or have any major facial damage. when I was landing from the helicopter ride what was left of my phone rung and a few days later I checked my messages. It was the kids insurance......calling when I wasn't with it, in shock etc. Asking if I had cones out, a vest on and proper ppe.......trying to push the blame on me......" oh your steal toes were showing the accident isn't our fault" or something like that I'd imagine they'd say. What really makes me cringe is seeing someone ride a motorcycle in sandals, shorts, or whatever or you see a chic on the back of of a motorcycle practically naked while the guy is zooming zigzaging out of traffic. I had some serious road rash and that was a short distance and the driver going 27mph. I couldn't imagine wiping off a bike. good and bad that day I wore a brand new pair of blue jeans and I think that's what saved me from more damage. long story short, when riding a bike I wouldn't cheap out on a helmet, but it's just not a helmet you need to protect you either. One of my peeves too. Another one: People in sandals or no shoes on an airplane. Wear real shoes for TO and landing! It's rare and chances are you'll never need to get out of a plane in a hurry but $hit happens! Tires blow, engines fail, going down an escape slide in bare feet into a puddle of fuel or snow in bare feet is gonna suck. As a young mechanic waiting on the Jetway to get to work on the late arrival that had to go out on the early flight I always marveled at the passengers who got off in sandals and shorts at -10 after landing in a snow storm who were surprised it was cold. What if you had to evacuate after a runway excursion with no shoes in the snow? It convinced me that besides sucking people are stupid. Not all, of course. You never leave the house without proper clothing and footwear to withstand the weather, whatever that may be. Regardless of where he’s flying, aways warm dry clothes just in case. 2 Quote

We recently were in St. Lucia. It was wonderful. On the plane back jeans and a long sleeve shirt rolled up, jacket in the overhead. Off in BOS it was cold, we weren't. My kids would say "but I'm going to be in a car!" to which I responded "what if it breaks down?" Hopefully it sunk in. 2 Quote
acem Posted April 9 Posted April 9 Obviously helmets save lives and serious injuries. However... I have an uncle and a brother in law who were in bad motorcycle accidents. Both were run completely over by a car. Not sure if a helmet would stay on while a car is completely running over you and dragging you down the road. Neither were right afterwards. Luckily the cars were going slow, they were in town. As a little kid I watched a motorcycle run a stop sign just in front of a car. Just ahead of us going down highway 64. Car locked up the brakes but still ran over the motorcycle and driver. The image of the rear axle jumping as the rear tires skidded and the car bouncing up on the motorcycle and driver are burned in my memory. Motorcyclist never came out from underneath the car until the wrecker got there. Big mess... Kinda turned me off motorcycles. Those motorcyclists who weave in and out of traffic are idiots. Quote
