IH Forever Posted June 20 Posted June 20 Mine is small compared to some posted here, but enough for us with the time I have. Spent some time today trying to thin out the d**n purslane. Got a lot but was hard on my green beans, carrots, and onions in the process. Should have cucumbers to pick in a few days. Probably could start digging some young potatoes. Those with som creamed peas are a favorite of mine. 5 Quote

I probably should have bought a couple to replant into a bigger container. No garden here this year, and my friend who had the truck patch passed away , so no veggies from his place. Several Amish stands within 10 miles away, so will go that route this year. Hopefully I will have a small garden next year. 2 Quote

yellowrosefarm Posted June 29 Posted June 29 What is interesting is that the sweet corn in the first pic is completely rolled up, the popcorn in the 2nd is stunted, but leafed out, and my neighbors 300 acres of field corn across the street looks like it's growing in the tropics. Quote

I think field corn is a lot more robust than the stuff we grow in gardens. Have seen similar things here in years past. Right now we have ample moister so the garden looks great. Even heave the weeds under control for now. Purslain is doing great on the North end where I seeded it down to grass however. Once the grass is big enough to mow... 1 Quote

Dug two hills of taters yesterday, looking good this year. Onions drying on the deck. Sweetcorn almost ready, just ate the last ear from last year. Have had a few meals of green beans now. Cucumbers are producing more than I know what to do with. This is a flower bed I planted on my north fence line. Planted what I’d call native plants and allowed to naturalize. This is light soil so some years it looks rough, but have had plenty of moisture this year. 5 Quote

MacAR Posted July 20 Posted July 20 It's been awful hot here, squash and cucumbers are just about done. Ma did can 14 pints of squash, and my step-mother did up 14 pints of sweet relish as well. Have a nice little stand of late pinto beans coming on. Tomatoes and peppers are doing well. Thinking of planting some pumpkins in a few weeks... haven't decided yet. 2 Quote

Potatoes turned out great, really some of the best I ever grew. The dry spell must have been good for them. Picked the sweet corn today and there are a lot of pumpkins coming on. Probably be some more beans and black eyed peas. Unbelievable for going 6 weeks with no rain and me only being able to water once a week. 4 Quote
barkerwc4362 Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Well the sweet corn and green beans are long gone. So are the cucumbers and squash. Still a few tomatoes left. But it's time to plant my wife's field peas. She likes the zipper variety because they shell so easily. So everything that was done was bush hogged and then disked. I let the ground set a couple of days in the heat to dry out all the trash. Then, last Tuesday I tilled the plot twice to really chop up the trash before I planted the peas. I used almost two pounds of seed on 8 - 85' rows. Those are 24" rows planted with the Cole 12MX two role planter on a 2 1/2 diamond tool bar. The Coles do not like trash of any sort so that is why I tilled it twice. They look good. It rained a 1/4" Thursday night and then about 3/4" Friday night/Saturday morning. Rained a little today. Noticed peas are already coming up. Should have taken a picture of the peas breaking the ground. The peas should be ready to pick late September. Supposed to be 68 days, but with the heat from now until then, generally they are a shorter period than that. Fewer people are growing peas here because of the labor involved. Usually they grow them in the late spring early summer, but I found I could grow them now and have less trouble with bugs. Also I want to grow sweet corn when everyone else is growing peas! 5 Quote
MacAR Posted August 3 Posted August 3 We pulled the last of our squash yesterday. Not because it was done, but because I was tired of fooling with it! The tomatoes and peppers are doing well, been giving away a lot of what we aren't eating or putting up. Deer have been in my pinto beans... I figured the patch being near the house and the hounds the deer wouldn't have bothered it; guess I figured wrong! Quote

Picked a bag-full out of one corner of one hill yesterday, took them to the Ike's. Melon's galore this year. Even the honeydews are looking good. Quote
