So was he shooting a reload or factory?  50 cal uses some real slow powders.  If you try to load it using the "normal" rifle powders you will be in for a surprise like this guy.  Even the slow magnum powders are considered "fast burners" in the 50 cal.

It was a tracer round of unknown origin obviously loaded way hotter than normal

The one thing that is the common denominator in all these videos is "there was one round with excessive muzzle flash before the round that blew up the weapon"

If you see excessive muzzle flash, stop firing from that lot of ammo.

Agreed.  I don't know how many times I have read about someone having trouble opening the bolt or action of a firearm just before a kaboom.  If anything seems different, stop and investigate.  Adverse ammo storage conditions can cause all sorts of wonderful results.  Ammo other than from a NATO member I would consider suspect.  Non-NATO manufacture and storage can result in all sorts of non-standard outcomes.

Was an old "slap" round of unknown origin. Powder may have been compromised. He didnt load them. That was over 2 years ago now. Amazing story.

My Godfather told me that in Basic in WWII if they wanted to punish you they would set some 30 06 out in the hot sun before giving it to you on the range.  Apparently it made it way hotter and it would kick the crap out of you.  Who knows how those old rounds were stored.  They may have been in a hot warehouse in sub-sahara Africa for 20 years before they were repatriated.

He's one lucky guy, that's for sure. Best I can remember, the issue was with the gun and not the ammo but I may mis-remember. He has another video where he recreates the incident on his channel that's worth a watch as well. I need to go back and watch them both to refresh my memory.

Scary video. Nothing graphic in it but just enough of what happend to make you know it wasn't good. I'm glad the guy came out ok. He blames old amo stored in who knows what manner and who knows if reloaded and how.

What is the gun? Somehow the screw-on breech looks a little sketchy.

It's a Serbu RN-50. It's a factory-made rifle. Threads are actually extremely strong. A grade 8 1/4-20NC bolt will hold better than 15,000lbs in tension before failure. This mating surface is much larger than that and also has the stock of the rifle locking it as well. Grade 8 1.5-6NC clamp load is 126,473lbs at rated torque. There is also some safety factor on top of that. Actual failure strength should be around 1.25x for safety factor. Rolled threads on bolts are stronger than machined threads which this rifle probably has.

 

So, I would venture to guess that had to be a stooopid hot round that likely had marginal head space issues to make that happen.

Yep! When I was quite young and doing target practice with the old Anschutz .22 I used whatever was in the drawer. One blew back. It was corroded. I didn't receive any injury, but I remember the incident.

A good friend of mine has that very rifle.  It is very heavy and soundly built.  He says in the follow up video the round was overpressured.  That gun will safely handle what the SAAMI specs are for .50 cal. all day long.
