Moldboard plow project thread.

Recommended Posts

Might as well have another project thread, right? The idea hit me yesterday. The uncle called, said his brother was cleaning out stuff and did I want a 2 bottom fast hitch plow that was in pieces, scrap price. I said sure. heck, he even delivered. This latest one is going to be a real project. Big pieces on the pallet, smaller ones in the barrel.

One of my regular stops has a Wheelabrator which I often get them to shotblast parts for me ......... free 👍 That plow in pieces like that and 10 minutes in a Wheelabrator would turn out like new

I believe that was the plan the uncle had and just didn't get to it.

Funny you mention the Wheelabrator. We have one where I work, blast cabinet is big enough you could drive your pickup in. Don't think they will let me blast my plow however.

Alright, took some pictures of some of the other candidates for this thread. These first two an Allis 84, I think, and a 565 Oliver. The AC is just a parts plow. The Ollie could be a parts plow or be fixed up, guess we'll have to see what necessity dictates. You can see I've already robbed some parts off the Orange one.

Next we have a little better picture of the 16 and 540 and Dad's 70. The 540 won't be much of a project, just needs a few minor things. 70 much the same, tires would be the biggest issue with it. Would really like to find the bolts to put the fourth bottom back on! Gene thinks he may have some if I don't find the originals. The 16, this thing is a serious project! Will be hunting parts and working on it as time allows.

Next, some of my collection of 50-60-70 series Allis plows. The semi-mount is kind of a wildcard. Bought it thinking resell it but I just don't know. Not many of them around. It doesn't have great wear parts, rest is pretty solid. The slat bottom one is a 73 very similar to the one I do most of my plowing with. We've had discussions on the Orange board about setting one like it up for 3-18's. It would be a good candidate for that and would be fun up at Albert City. In the concrete we plow around here in the fall I'm digging out a 3-14 this year!IMG_2917.jpeg

Next up, couple of Olivers, both 565's. The 5-16 that currently lives outdoors is the one I want to hook to the 856. It's in pretty good shape, not much of a project, maybe. It has shear-pin trip bottoms. The 4 bottom in a previous post has cushion trips, better if rocky places. Who knows. The 565 in the shed is the first Meadow Green one I drug home. It's already been through project time. Has new shares, shins, and land-sides. Other than possibly setting it for 16" cut this one isn't going to change much.

Down to the last two pictures I took yesterday. First the 73 slat-bottom I use quite a bit. Nothing to do with this one other than drop her in the dirt and clean up afterward. The other is a 62 on my D-15 and not a very good picture. This is the rig I would like to take to Reedsburg but after last falls debacle I'm going to have to see if the stupid thing will go in the ground! I've got a couple of other Allis 2 bottoms, both 52's. One of which is the one that would not go in the ground at KAPOOT plow day.

There’s a guy locally who has over 100 plows sitting in his yard. He sees one at an auction that he doesn’t have, he’ll buy it. He’s kids will end up having a plow only auction when he passes!

I sometimes wonder what will happen with/to all this stuff I drag home, don't worry about it too much though.

Hopefully I get 'retired' in a couple years and then have time to get some of this stuff streamlined. Working toward that goal, slowly. It's going by though, doesn't seem like it was that long ago I was telling the guys I work with, "it only has to last four more years!" First two went by pretty quick! One co-worker really likes when I through that out there, he's a year older than me and says he's going to have to stay six years after I go.

Bearingers are too far most likely for shipping if you need a part but I really like their yard so I will post a pic. they have most plows disassembled and the parts warehoused.

My hot set up.
I’ve had to do a lot of work to the AC 2-12 model 4 . Model 4 were a model lighter than the model 2 with trailers wheel AC  ,with long landslide. AC marketed them as being able to work behind any tractor. All I can say is it works good behind our C . I really like this plow . I made some modifications to the plow for competition per advice from my plowing competitors.

i will compete again with it if all goes well in the Ohio state ploughing matches in July close to Ansonia ,

Going to practice at my friends Farmall Bob,maybe harts grove and for sure at Pioneer Steam and gas show in May to work the bugs out.

I practice in a plot 40 feet by  265 feet

I picked this up last fall. Needs some new pieces but still works. Biggest issue is I need to stop to drop it. Lifting on the the go is fine. Might be old grease in it, or a bad spring. I'd like to upgrade to something more so for the M hp.

Got the plow home for C figured out I am missing the brackets that mount off bell housing and torque tube. Trying to find a solution or may just fab them myself.

I looked at 2 Farmall C tractors last fall and one had brackets under it but I don't remember exactly what they were. I passed on them but a month ago I told him if he narrowed them up so I could load them I would take them.  I told his/my buddy and he offered to deliver them on his deckover. If you can wait until he brings them I may be able to help
