Drug home a new piece of red iron...sort of.

The Mrs is ready for a new rig.

With the kids moved out, we are no longer lugging them and their friends around. No need for the expanse that is the Excursion. So...what to get. We looked at a few SUV including new Bronco. Not thrilled with the looks and even less thrilled about the lack of towing capacity not to mention the payments. So we talked about all of the stuff we were foolish enough to sell that we wish were still around. We both landed on my 78 Bronco. Dead reliable and great in the snow. Towing ability to boot. So after months and months looking and a few deals gone sour, here she is.

400 crate engine. Fresh rebuilt C6. Two new rear quarters and inner tubs. It is a factory air/tilt/cruise truck. The new Holley carb needs some tuning (not surprised) and an alignment but she's a good base to start with. Only rust I can find is a bit on the tailgate and the floor pans will get swapped probably in spring.

I'm not going to sugar coat it. Selling the Excursions is going to suck. It'll be the end of an era for us. I've had a 7.3 in the fleet ever since they came out. The 2002 is coming up to auction in a few weeks and I have a guy who's been hounding me for years to buy the 2000 since it was rolled. It'll be nice to get some shed space back though.

That's a good looking Ford, right there! All the ones around here looked like that for about a year or until hitting the road salt in the winter. Then they aged 20 years by next winter.

This is actually a Wisconsin truck! We picked it up near Hayward. Transplanted from SD in 2014 it has been his daily driver since. Truck finally needed quarters two years ago. I didn't want a full restored one or mint survivor because we are going to drive it year around. It has a 20 foot paint job but this fits our bill nicely. We only put between 3 and 5k miles per year on the Excursion so here's hoping we get a few years out of this one...

I like it.  I wouldn’t want to buy gas for it, but I like it.
I had a 400m in a very very nice 78 150, in the 90’s.  With 60k in it, on 33x12.50’s (31x10.50’s on yours?)  mine was good for a solid 7mpg.  Driven lightly.

I had a set of those sport king tires too, in 2006.  I haven’t seen a pair of those in a long time.  They were good tires

Those are 33s. My old 78 had 4:11s and got 5mpg.😩 I did what I could and bought one with 3:50 gears. Saving grace is the limited miles we will be putting on. Oil changes will be a lot cheaper than the 7.3 as well. Maybe ditch the Holley for EFI? Remains to be seen. Most important is reliability. The Mrs is a better wrench than any of my buddies wives. Heck, she's a better wrench than some of my buddies but I still don't want her on the side of the road...

I grew up riding regularly in that era of Bronco.

My friends parents had a resort and bought new vehicles regularly.

Had a yeller round headlight with v8/standard.  White spokes and bias plies......

Then a brown square headlight with v8/auto.  Chrome spokes and bias plies.....

Then one of the round nose jobs, two tone blue with I6/standard but the trans was not a granny low and was high geared.  What a pouch, but it was all carpeted and fancy to ride in.

That's a nice excursion too. And the fuel mileage is probably better than the 400?

My uncle had a black 78 or 9 bronco for a number of years. Red interior. He had bought it from the original owner. He had a farm sale and sold most of his stuff in the 90s and put the farm in set aside and went trucking. The Bronco was on the sale. The original owner bought it back if I recall.

Nice Bronco. Had several 79 Ford Pickups but never a Bronco. Good, reliable drivetrain and with tilt/cruise it would be a fairly high option version I’d think.

Bronco was a private listing. He had it on marketplace and c-list.

BaT is kicking back our listing. They refuse to list it with a reserve. I'm pretty confident we won't lose on it but that's usually when I'm wrong. I just feel like there's a lot of people watching that site right now and I see adds sitting stagnant on evil-bay. So sick of dealing with marketplace morons and Craig's list crazies I thought I'd give it a try. I don't need 79k for it either. After all, the winning p-ball ticket is hanging on my fridge. Just waiting for them to draw my numbers...
