Trike Tractor on Freeway

I saw something today that I cannot explain, and I thought that maybe one of you knowledgeable people on here may help.

I was coming across I 40 in New Mexico today and I saw something that was very different. I was heading east, and I just happen to look across to the vehicles that were entering the freeway on the other side going west. There was a "vehicle" that looked like an early modified pulling tractor type of thing, coming up to freeway speed. The driver was setting up between the rear wheels like a tractor, the rear tires were bigger, not tractor tires, it was shiny black and chrome with an engine up front and chrome pipes running up along the sides back past the driver.

I only saw it for a second, but it was definitely different, and my thought at the time was that I would not be riding that on the freeway. I am guessing it was the size of a big frame tractor.

Have any of you guys that live out that way seen anything like this? I don't think I am totally nuts.

Thanks for your help.
