Local auction has a AC 4W-220.  Always wanted one of those since I first discovered them.  Apparently other guys have discovered them too  because at that price and reserve not met, I’m not even going to bother.  Probably could have got it for nothing 15 years ago.

All Allis. That's what makes some parts an issue on them.

I know where some like this are. I doubt they are for sale since there are several. Used to be a strong Allis dealer near Searcy Arkansas.

This is a pic from the web. They are east of Bald Knob Arkansas north of hwy US64. They are wearing rice and canes I'm sure. They live outside.

I thought they were built by Stieger?

Allis had a model before built by Steiger. It was the same as a bearcat or wildcat.

Me too. One of those is probably worth at least 3 times more than that 4wd.

The bidding ain’t over yet.  But I rather have the 4x4.  Much nicer to run and way more usable.  That other 220 looks like parade queen that’s afraid to get dirty with a don’t touch sign on it.  I like to use what I collect

Until you realize it won't start when cold out without a good block heater and maybe some nose candy

That model is a little bit more common.  Dale is correct but in the 80s Steiger used AC transmissions in some their tractors guessing the same one in the 8550.

I think 1985 Steiger Cougars are the only ones with AC trans and optional AC axles. I’m not sure what transmission the 8550 used, but it’s my understanding the one in 1985 Steiger Cougar tractors is the same as a 4W-305. Mine has AC axles and the way the AC mechanic explained it to me was that the Steiger used two “front” axles from a 4W-305 for the front and rear. 4W-305 and 8550 tractors aren’t often mentioned as “muscle tractors”, but I always thought they fit that category with the twin turbo, dual stack set up.

They were probably no worse than the JD's of that era.  Smaller engines compared to Steiger and Versatile

I don’t know much about the engines that Allis used, but I can’t complain about the durability of the AC trans or axles in the Steigers. I don’t think I would be afraid of an Allis.

My next door neighbor has a 4 w 305, got to run it for a day about 4 years back. It had a funny vibration if ran at full throttle. Back it off a little and all was fine. After 3 dropped valves and ruined pistons and 1 head. The injection pump was found to be turned up way too high by the previous owner. The funny vibration and the twin smoke trail went away after the pump was set back to spec. With the new power setting on the pump ,there wasn't any notable loss in performance .

Those tractors are right in my neighborhood,  straight up guy. I think the 440 came out of Montana about 10 years ago . His family has more Allis Chalmers equipment than anyone in the country and they farm a fair amount of land with it, they also restore AC tractors for people all over the USA.
