wheatking
this new to me 1086 is a 1980 model with the digital tach and the hour meter, one with the 4 digits and 2 black one i consider to be the minute counter and the other with what i call the seconds counter, sometimes when running is will randomly start flipping fast and keep counting unless i move the throttle then it smartens up and counts at the normal rate it may do it again right away or not for awhile, the tach its self isn't accurate sometime it'll only read 300 rpm and what i figure is 1850 rpm or it'll read 6000 rpm at same 1850 or sometime it'll read right, not sure if these problems are related Thanks
Matt Kirsch
It's 1/10ths and 1/100ths of hours. Why they got so granular on the 86 series, I have no idea why they felt the need to get so granular. Maintenance intervals are in tens or hundreds of hours. Anyway I had the same problem. I was told it was caused by low voltage, as I recall. It always seemed to do it while the tractor was sitting and the batteries were getting low. My tractor needs to be completely rewired but it's functional as it is so I don't worry about it. Since I try not to let it sit for too long without at least having a battery maintainer on it anymore, I have not noticed it happening. Diesel Doctor
Low voltage is a death sentence to electronics.
Drysleeves
And that clicking noise is interesting. Never really understood the point of it but like so many other quirky aspects of IH products nobody asked me.
HydroTek
The hour meter is mechanical -- pulsed solenoid with a ratchet to advance the meter wheels
FarmerFixEmUp
Try cleaning the sensor in the front right corner of the speed transmission housing. They get junk built up on them from clutch dust. Otherwise the tach may need to be sent to Ag Express.

A quirk nobody would've noticed had the Control Center not delivered such a quiet environment
wheatking
couple good suggestions i'll try the sensor first then maybe check out the alternator , i had put 1 new battery in when i got it and its started very good every time, the alternator is still painted red original with 8900 hrs so it could very well not be charging at idling rpm
HydroTek
Your gauges don't work -- voltage gauge ?
