1956 TD-6 wheres transmission drain plug?

Recommended Posts

This is a new machine, I have gone over the service manuals and engine manuals and they all tell me how to rip it all apart and put it together but I can't find where it says the transmission drain plugs are... if this is an easy answer for someone I would greatly appreciate the help.

obscured by drawbar or other ad ons.

its 60  + yrs of neglected service expect EVERY cavity to be/need inspected and serviced before any heavy work or 2+hrs at a go

ASSUME ROLLERS EMPTY AND FINALS DRY!!

Take mmi's advice x2.

Finals = Final Drive = Sprocket drive (sprocket that turns the track at rear of machine)

Get yourself an operator's manual, I've attached a couple of pages from the operator's manual, be sure and lube the clutch zerk fittings, the pilot bearing too, also the brake pedal zerk fittings that are in the clutch compartment, use a flashlight to find them. The final drives and transmission use 90 weight gear oil. Is this a 61 or 62 series?

This is exactly what I need. I have 3 other manuals but not this one. It's a series 62. Where do I get this?

Is illustration 32 showing the plug near the rear by the steering clutches?

Yes, between the two-brake inspection covers, you may need to slide the drawbar to one side to see it as mmi stated. There is a lot of oil (16 quarts) in the transmission as it is common with the ring and pinion section. Check ebay for a manual, try to get an original IH operators manual, the reproduction manuals sometime are missing pages and also can be hard to read as they are reprints. My question about being a 61 or 62 series is you call it out as a 1956, 62 series began with the '58 models, do you have a serial number for the tractor? The 61 and 62 series use a lot of the same common parts. Post some pictures of your tractor.

Happy to shoot over some pictures not sure where I find the serial number. Got the drain unplugged and the picture shows the oil color. The finals had good oil in them and were full. I was thinking of draining transmission all out overnight. Any issues with that?

Not sure that is a 56 62 series, might be earlier model? Looks like water contamination in the oil.

If I read that serial # correctly it is 16457.  1947 model. Someone has tried to update it it (coil instead of magneto and obvious yellow paint over red).

The serial was on the gas engine side. Nothing on the panel that I can see

Where is this plate located? It looks to be the tractor serial number plate; it should be located on the dash in front of the right brake pedal. Can you take a better picture of this plate and its location.

This was on the gas engine block, tdbkm10506 was on the Diesel engine block

Yes there is a difference, 1956 TD6 would be a 61 series, 1959 the 62 series came out, 62 series used a D282 direct start (glow plugs) 6 cylinder engine, the 61 series used the D264 or D281 4 cylinder gas start diesel engine. The earlier TD6 tractors used the D248 gas start diesel engine. The later (62 series) have 1000 hour rollers, top idler, gear shift lever is located on the right side of the compartment. There are other small changes, mostly cosmetic. Some parts are interchangeable.
