My Grandmother had a party line up until almost 2000.  She always had the gossip of the two neighbor girls while they were growing up.  She would get so mad waiting to use the phone with them.  Eventually she would pick up and tell them to get off the phone.  She had a temper when pushed too far.  Mind you, Mr. Bell's service division also was a piece of work too.  Grandpa died in 1986, no crap, Bell showed up to Barry the phone line that had been hanging on the fence all along the lane from road to house 11 years later.  Said they were here because he had called in to service department.   Grandma was ama,Ed that the old fool could use a phone let alone use one from the grave!  Service guy was embarrassed to say the least when he found out Grandpa was long gone.  I don't think he thought much of his companies service call organization.

Made Grandma laugh a bit after she calmed down.  They did burry the line that day though!
